When The Lights Go Out [Post #1]
Boston Facility [Massachusetts]

-- EVENT
The lights went out abruptly.

There had been no indication prior, no clue given, no initial flicker before the power died. Darkness simply swept in and engulfed the entire compound like a snuffer over a bright candle flame.

Curiosity spread whispers between cells, wondering about cause and extent. The back-up generators should have kicked on to offer something. And then they did. Floor lighting illuminated softly as well as solitary bars of light above each and every door.

The catch was the silence that settled.

No humming around cell doors, no computerized voice insisting that everyone stay calm and remain where they were. No verbal threat given via PA. No flashing and twirling lights that indicated a problem. No artificial air circulation pumping old air outside the buildings or drawing new air inward.

Prisoners have an odd tendency to push their luck when the power goes out.

-- Players need to be aware of the following:
  • Though the power is out and back-up power is in use - in obviously decreased supply - the emergency source is funneled primarily into keeping the mutation dampeners running.
  • Mutation dampening fields surround the area as well to keep attempted rescue missions to a minimum. If you are an outsider and you get too close, your mutation(s) will suffer.
  • There are four sentinels present in this setting so be on your guard and aware of your surroundings.
  • Elements of the setting can and will change, be aware of alterations.
  • Normal humans haven't gotten to this point by being stupid and skipping over security measures.
  • The surrounding area is dense forest, the nearest flicker of civilization is near a hundred miles away, there is a river about 12 miles west.
  • Characters 'abandoned' in this thread, may become captured.

-- RULES
  • This is an open event.
  • Plot some storylines!!
  • Genesis's Board Rules Apply!

It was strange, he had gotten used to the mind games they were playing with him, so the moment he had heard that click coming from his cell door he hadn’t moved an inch. No he had remained seated on the damp, cold floor and had his eye fixed on the slit that had opened up when the door had come unlocked. Scott had learned his lesson the hard way, especially in the beginning where they had taken his attempts to escape as a way to learn about his abilities.

It had cost him an eye. His left one. It was why he was now sporting a very nice eye patch, which made him look like a damn pirate. Beard an all. Yet something told him that this was different from the last times they had tried to trick him.

Those bastards, trying to figure out his mutation and going all the way to do it. Silence, it was the first thing that got to him. Nothing to hear, nobody shuffling in the hallway and it made him stand up regardless of what his past experience told him.

The need to escape wasn’t there anymore, it had faded over time especially after he had lost so much. His brother, Emma… he was afraid if he escaped, found Gabe he would bring death to his younger brother’s door and he would lose him. That had been motivation enough to not join the mind games. To just sit here and wait what they would do next to him.

But now… now he slowly opened his celldoor, stuck his head outside and looked left and right. Nobody to see, which was strange.

“Bond.” He whispered as they ducked into a pliable flower bush. “James Bond.” He continued, briefly wondering about the purple flower that littered the greenery they sought to steep themselves in. Gabriel shifted slightly as he tried to find a decently comfortably place to set his knee. Pretty much well impossible when you were trying to stake out a building in the middle of a forest at night.

A quarter mile away at about a twenty degree incline they had a decent view of the compound. He was sort of surprised. He didn’t want to admit to being entirely taken aback by the fact that there really was something out in these woods. The nearby town had long since been abandoned and he had assumed that any government facility would have steered clear of any sign of previous civilization. At least when it came to hiding mutants. Even if they hadn’t seen a humanoid individual for hours.

Caitlin’s presence was far from appreciated. He hadn’t wanted her with him. Even if the thought sounded completely wrong in his head. There were few and far between moment when he preferred her not with him, but this was one of them. All he wanted was her safe. Out of the way of direct conflict. Because one of them needed to be. His thought were immediately assaulted by a tiny pair of redheads with bright blue eyes. And then he imagined one setting the other on fire and he huffed out a sigh. If Megan let them even remotely…he shook his head to dispel the digression.

He could make her out from the corners of his eyes without having to look directly at her. All right, he could make out profile. It was difficult to make out fine detailed features when the lighting was so poor. The compound offered a subtle glow to the surrounding area, but likely a mile out, no one would ever suspect its presence. He wondered how bright it was within the actual walls.

“Whoa, what the crap?” He exhaled when the immediate area and the expanse of ‘facility’ before them went utterly dark. He nudged Caitlin with the back of his and nearest her. “Babe.” He nudged her again, his focus still on where the buildings had been. “Babe, it’s dark.” Well no shit, Gabriel. It was waiting on the tip of her tongue, he knew it, he just couldn’t pull his eyes away to look at her in order to accept the sarcasm head on.

A humming seemed to sweep through the darkness, a lighting resumed. Horrible lighting, but lighting regardless. “What just happened?”

So they had stuck her down here. Fabulous. Just fabulous. Because getting her close to the resistance up there hadn’t worked. Now she looked and felt like a needle cushion. Not one of the guards here seemed to know that she was on the damned payroll of the SGF. She knew there was no point complaining about it. Those bastards made the rules and they were the reason that her life had been less bad than that of most other humans in the past years. But Madelyne knew better than to believe that she was any more than another puppet in this game, strung high, and ready to be cut off at any moment.

She lay awake, as she did most nights, on her bunk, waiting for the time to pass. Her usually red hair had faded to a strawberry blonde she hated. It was tangled, dirty, pulled up in a messy heap with a tied she had fashioned out of the lowest inch of fabric the pants she had been issued. She needed a shower, a facial, a pedicure and new clothes.

None were in store.

That was when the lights went out.

Madelyne held her breath. She knew this kind of thing by now. It always went dark before they came for her, yanked her brutally out of her bed or away from whatever she was doing at the moment and then dragged her to some secret place to introduce the next stage of their not-working plan. She wondered when they would finally be tired of her.

But no one came. Madelyne sat, then slipped towards her cell door on silent feet. Gulping she stuck her head outside. Nothing. No one.

Well, this is new …

Even in her intangible state, Kitty could feel the odd sensation in her right leg. She growled at it, willing it away, while knowing that no will power would fix this. So she would have to keep herself busy. Busy to find something to counteract what was happening with her. Busy to find a solution to more and more people going bump in the night because someone thought mutants were the new anti-christ. Busy to find a way to protect her son.

Eric. She gulped. Eric. Eric Gunnar Thorson. That was his Asgardian name. In this world? He would be Eric Thorson-Pryde. But part of her was beginning to believe that maybe it was time to show him his paternal heritage. Any place in this universe was safer than this world for their kind.

She swallowed again, focusing to continue her path upwards. Asgard meant that she would not see Eric for the damned gods knew how long. Odin and Thor had had a mad fallout … over her. Their marriage had never gotten the old man’s blessing. Kitty knew that she was a persona non grata in Asgard. She couldn’t go. Only her husband and son could. She had to convince Thor.

Another twitch in her leg as she broke through the surface. Kitty growled, then took in the form of a tall man standing in the high grass. He was asking what had just happened, and Kitty let herself turn tangible. “Someone pushed a few buttons”, she said, announcing her arrival. This one was Gabriel Summers. She had seen his face in the files she had dug up in the past weeks. Kitty’s gaze followed his line of sight and there she saw a familiar face. “Caitlyn?”

It had been so long.

[OOC: Sorry to just jump in like this. Let's just say that Bobby's been with the Resistance for years, has been living in the HQ with the rest, and out-drank Gabriel so that he'd allow Iceman to join this party. BIC:]

The moment he learned about this latest mission, Bobby knew he can't sit idly by. Paige has had her fun a number of times in the past by going out on her own - most of the time against anyone else's wishes - and he promised himself to take the next mission that fell upon his lap. Not that the mutant of cold willed for a mission like this into existence, he simply felt like he had to get out and about to let out some steam - literally and figuratively.

“Bond. James Bond.”

Bringing himself back into the present, Bobby poorly stiffles a laugh over his team leader's impersonation of a famous movie spy, ending up in a faint snort of sorts. He glanced over his shoulder though missed seeing Gabriel eclipse himself behind the bush just as the lights ahead of them went out for what seemed like a long minute.

"Whoa, what the crap?", he heard his fearless leader exclaim from somewhere in the darkness behind him.

Growing both curious and suspicious, he crept forward ever so slighty and went down on all fours, trying to peer into the direction of the complex. Bobby tried to keep his eyes peeled for any sign of movement in the dark, should he catch any, though his concentration skills just got put to the test with a nudge from behind.

"Babe.", then yet another nudge from behind. "Babe, it's dark."

"Iz wittle Gabbykins afwaid of the dawk?", Iceman retorted, playfully trying to swat whatever it was that Gabriel tried to nudge him with. "I think "Babe" is right over there to your left."

His ears picked up the sound of motors humming in the distance just before Gabe asked out loud what he himself asked in is mind. Something was up, and he wanted to know what.

"Anyone think we should..."

“Someone pushed a few buttons”

His question cut short by a familiar yet unexpected voice, Bobby instinctively solidified clear, hard ice spikes from his knuckles. He shifted his stance within a heartbeat and was poised to strike until he distinguished what sounded like gentleness coming from that familiar voice.

"Caitlyn?"

He lowered his guard and began to inch closer until he was in line with the towering Gabriel. Only then did Bobby sublimate his ice spikes as he shook his own hands though forcing water off his skin.

"Spritely lass there, aye?", he began with a fake accent then crossed his arms over his chest. "Were we expecting company? I might have missed that in the briefing." Thoughtfully, Bobby followed up by turning to Gabriel and saying, "You gave a briefing, right?"

Kitty knew exactly what her husband would have to say about this. You didn't go in half-hearted, certainly not half-cocked. Then again, it amused her when Thor Odinson actually sported such advice given that usually the bringing of Mjöllnir was what he considered proper mission preparation. Well, Kitty had no hammer. She only had her phasing, her wit. And she would make use of both for as long as she would have either at her disposal.

The thought that those days were now certainly numbered tickled the unvented panic she had sealed to the lowest corners of her stomach. She gulped, staring at the third face appearing. Well, this officially made this a crowd now, didn't it? Kitty didn't need a file or a photograph to identify this fellow. She knew him from the school. It had certainly not been for too long. After discovering her pregnancy she had left the institute rather quickly.

But he was a familiar face. One from a time that felt so much like a lovely dream, from which you woke up to an absolute horror scenario.

Kitty still knelt. She waited for her leg to stop ... doing that thing. It would be okay by the end of this night, or possibly tomorrow. This symptom came and went. It usually got worse with stress. Such as this ... She sighed, and eventually stood slowly. "Bobby Drake ...", she said not without disbelief. "You always skipped the briefings ..."

Cait rolled her eyes at Gabe’s antics and let out a soft sigh. “You doofus.” She murmured, trying to keep the grin from her lips. Her empathy flared out and she tried to see if there were any sentries nearby that they had to dodge or take out to avoid being noticed so they wouldn’t end up in the facility they were currently staking out.

Nothing so far. Which was a good thing until her husband had to comment about the sudden darkness. Which was weird, had they been detected? “Well aren’t you observant.” She snorted when he told her it was dark. Then she shook her head again when the other member of their team had to ask Gabe if he was afraid of the dark.

She sighed again. She was traveling with toddlers. On a mission with three year olds.

But then, then there was suddenly someone else. Somebody who she hadn’t seen in such a long time. The woman spoke, first addressing Cait and then Bobby and it took her a moment before she could process it properly. “Kitty?” she finally said, taking a step towards the woman.

“It’s really you.” Cait took another step towards her, a smile now on her lips and a weight lifted from her chest. Another person she knew who was okay. Who hadn’t been taken.

The sound of Bobby’s voice cutting through the darkness stabbed a glaring wedge of sobriety into the moment and Gabriel felt his features shift in the dark. “It must be your feminine figure.” He rolled his eyes and sidestepped the other mutant as his hand pushed forward groping and unseeing until it settled against the curve of a more familiar backside to which he offered a faint squeeze. Just to be sure, of course. Bobby continued on and he muted him out, only giving in when a new voice penetrated the darkness.

Someone pushed buttons. How convenient. But who and why? The softer voice drew out the name of the woman beside him, familiarity in the tone and he turned to make out the outline of the mystery girl. If this person knew Caitlin, then maybe he knew her. Maybe. Or maybe not. Still, considering their dwindling numbers…

“Meow.” He couldn’t hold it back. It slipped unbidden from between his lips, however quietly he managed the moment Caitlin seemed to identify the voice addressing her. “Excellent.” He whispered, noting the women stepping towards one another. Caitlin returned to the apparent unspoken sentiment. “I’m glad we’re all reacquainting at the ten year reunion. Maybe we can all get shots later.”

Shifting he turned back towards the compound. If he had left like he had wanted without Cait, he wouldn’t be standing in the dark near a bush with the likes of Bobby and ‘Kitty’ along with his wife. “But, dude, she’s right.” He pointed towards Bobby in the crappy lighting. “You always miss briefings.” He attempted to skate around the word ‘skip’ in an attempt to give Bobby the benefit of the doubt, but sometimes he really wondered why he bothered to.

“I should have left you all behind.” He muttered. With the children. Not that he was keen on the idea of Bobby Drake around his children. Regardless of how adept they twins seemed to be with their abilities already.

Every hair on the back of his neck stood on end when the familiar sound of magnetics shifted about seventy feet from their preset location and he noted the backside of a sentinel moving away from them before disappearing behind the facility’s structure. It would be nice if they could… “Kitty.” He said her name, rolling it about on his tongue and across his mental space. “The girl that could walk through walls.” He shifted slightly, he focus still on the line of building where the sentinel vanished. “How close have you been to this place?” If she had been inside, that could prove helpful, yet if she had ever been inside, she wondered how she would have ever gotten out. Likely the area was lined with or projected that ridiculous mutation frequency that seemed to inhibit them. It was half the reason he wasn’t barreling forward already.

“But really, who would turn the lights out?” He pondered. Maybe it was a test of some sort. “Maybe it’s a game.” He continued, his thoughts running away.

Never accept the reality you are seeing. That was something that filtered through Ben's head as he cracked open his eyes to find himself in utter darkness. The darkness didn't last long as an emergency system kicked into place. Slowly pushing himself up from his cot he tilted his head trying to pick up sounds from outside his cell. It didn't seem as if there was much going on and he wondered if this was another trick being played by his captors; a game to test him. Well, it wasn't as if Ben actually participated in their games, after all he wasn't stupid. No, the others might have had some hope left in them to press their luck, but not Ben, after all one did not grow up on the streets without knowing how to survive.

Ben of course hadn't always been indifferent to his circumstances, a man would be hard pressed to be indifferent when your best friends served you up on a silver platter to the government. No, Ben had been all fire and brimstone upon his capture. But a man, even one like Ben, can take only so much abuse before quieting down and becoming more cooperative, it also didn't help when your powers were stripped from you. So he didn't play the games any more. Especially after witnessing Scott's last test, idiot lost an eye by playing their games.

Letting out a gruff sigh of annoyance Ben turned his back on his cell door and closed his eyes. He was at least happy no alarms were blaring. Those are what annoyed him most, damn alarms and computerized voices.

Wait.

No alarms.

Ben bolted out of his cot and ran to his cell door. He tried to look out the little window but his field of view didn't offer him much. The halls were empty and this puzzled Ben to the point where he tried his door. He jumped back when the door actually opened, "What the hell?!" Ben's loud shout of surprise soon filled the halls and his booming voice echoed off the empty hallway walls. What should he do? Was this really a test? Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath Ben listened to his instincts and the first thing that came into his head was, Run.
