The Chase [Cindy / Jay] [Post #1]
The Chase

One of the things Jay loves to do is fly, and it is his only means to escape SentS for a few hours and have time to himself. To clear his mind, and try to forget about all the atrocities he sees. It is on one of these flights through the high buildings of NYC that something interesting happens.

A girl being chased.

RULES
* For Cindy [Typh] & Jay [Ellen] initially. Crashing is allowed.
* Time: Mid January 2026
* All GENEsis and Board rules apply.

She had no idea what had tripped its trigger. Okay, that was a lie. She knew exactly what it had been. Tugging a child out of the way of a toppling building was grounds to questioning, probably. The likes of questioning committed by a robot, though, rarely ever ended well for people who didn’t fit into its ‘safe’ programming. If it hadn’t been chasing after what she presumed to be a mutant, she likely wouldn’t have been in the situation that she was, with it presently chasing after her. Its new subject of interest.

If she was smart, which sure, she sometimes could be, she would have disappeared into a throng of people. But when a Sentinel put itself directly into a human area, they had a tendency to scatter or draw back out of its way rather than melding around it like a stream around a stone. She had had the smarts at least to lift the lower portion of her mask from beneath her sweatshirt to cover the lower portion of her face.

That some Sentinels were capable of actual agile flight was not working for her. The model on her trail was oddly smaller than any she had ever seen before, more compact. Evolved. Like the older models were nokias, and this newer was a pin thin transparent smart phone. Not okay.

Something exceedingly warm pushed by her right shoulder and shifted to the right, pushed out a line of wedding to attach to the upper outcropping of the next building, and then reached for an old postal mail bin with another cord of webbing from her right hand. She yanked on the metallic structure and yanked it back towards her, shifting out of the way enough for it to collide with her pursuer. It manage to slow it down somewhat, it careened out of alignment and dropped to its stupid feet on the ground below.

It tried to say something and she lifted herself up onto her intended rooftop to put it behind her, even if just for a moment. Maybe a minute at best, she imagined.

Her hand went immediately to the black zip hoodie and she undid the zipper, peeled the item off of herself, then tugged the navy tee beneath it off as well. She tossed the items in an upturned air vent and moved onto pushing the black leggings down her legs. The body suit was more like a high neck bathing suit with the mask often left around her neck until she tugged it upward. All she had to do to expand the rest of it was to-

The presence of someone else on the rooftop took the breath right out of her lungs.

“What are you looking at?” She snapped. Metal groaned somewhere back and beneath her and she could barely make out the sound of it running a diagnostic check.

Jay hoovered high up in the sky, above a building, soaking in the sun for the time being. He was trying to ease his mind, to get rid of the images he had accumulated in the last twenty-four hours. The things he had seen, his body shuddered. He had tried to talk to his brother about it but he told Jay to get out of SentS. That this wasn’t worth his mental health.

Paige had told him the same but Jay couldn’t leave. Not when there were still kids to free, mutants to save. He was a better asset on the inside.

This way he could keep track on what they had planned. Or were planning.

So, these meditation sessions high up in the sky were his means to get rid of the horrible. For now. Jay didn’t kid himself that this would haunt him, he already had nightmares.

Pulled out of his thoughts, his eyes caught something in the distance. Someone was getting chased by… When had they released those new sentinels out in the open? They weren’t cleared for use yet, they were still going through test phases. Or at least he had thought so. Seeing one fly out in the open told him that they had ditched the testing in controlled space, and had put it out in the open.

Jay just watched, his eyes narrowed as he saw the person shoot through buildings in what he thought was Spider-Man’s signature movement, but this person had long black hair. It was a girl, but she was shooting webbing.

He lowered himself down to the rooftop, and wasn’t surprised to see her end up on his roof.

He was however surprised to see her shed her clothing and end up in a bodysuit, that had the markings of another spider person? What? Jay was apparently gawking when she snapped at him.

“You, getting undressed… I usually take a girl out on a few dates before that happens.” He rubbed his chin, flexed his wings before folding them back behind him.

“That sentinel will be up here in a few moments… You need help?” Because he had clearance to disengage the machines from whatever target they were pursuing. He just hoped that it would work on this newer model as well.

She had half a thought to tug the mask down from over her mouth to better enunciate for the dingbat that apparently couldn’t comprehend her otherwise perfect clear articulation. When he finally lifted his gaze and met hers, she lifted her brows expectantly for him to open his mouth, though when he did, she had to struggle to not roll her eyes. Yes, she was getting undressed, sort of, upper layers only.

“That must work a lot.” She muttered, wondering if his disjointed attempt at explaining himself manage to win him over hordes of pretty girls. He was pretty enough himself, the type she might have blushed and ducked her head around when she had been young.

Cindy plucked her hairtie from her wrist, ran her fingers over the center of the webbing design on her suit so that nanotech took over to flesh out the arms and legs of her suit, then gathered her hair into some attempt at a ponytail atop her head.

“Need your help?” She set her hands on her hips. “And what are you planning to do? Take off into the air and wave your arms and wings about?” Because honestly, that might actually steal the attention off of her at least long enough to slip away while it scanned and gauge the man before her. She turned enough to look back at him, having apparently taken half a step while she thought about leaving him to the Sentinel. “It’s not much help when I have to rescue you in the end.” And it would end up just that way, because she would be unable to leave him to whatever fate a Sentinel had for him, dragging him back to the Services for dissection or brainwashing.

Or, maybe he wasn’t a mutant and had gotten pecked at by a radioactive…cardinal? She glanced at the hint of red wing over his shoulder. “Or you’re one of them.”

She took half a step back towards the edge at that thought. Cindy would honestly rather take her chances with the Sentinel than a mutant who apparently disliked his own kind enough to team up with SentS.

“I don’t have time for this.” Sorting out who or what he was. And it wasn’t important enough to linger to find out. She turned back towards the ledge and lifted her right hand out to her side, only to be brought up short by the quickly rising bot that suddenly blocked her view. It moved towards her and she leaped backward to create distance. “Thanks for the distraction.” She called to Flyboy, because if he hadn’t been there, she would have been long gone already. Webbing flicked out of her fingertips and connected with the siding of the rooftop door. She used the tether to snap herself across the roof and place herself behind the small construct to better gauge her next move off the stupid roof.

“No, not really.” He answered her, because it had been a failed attempt of being funny. His brother had more luck when it came to women. Jay had always been the silent one, more interested in playing his guitar.

So, Jay watched her prep herself. Her suit extended itself over her arms and legs and gather her hair in a ponytail. Within seconds she had transformed from just a girl into a vigilante, who probably could kick his ass to kingdom come. That made him smile.

And she didn’t want his help. As she was clearly stating right now by ridiculing his wings. That just made his smile become wider and he shrugged his shoulders. And it was even more amusing when she assumed that she had to rescue him. It was tempting to let her think that he was helpless against a sentinel, even if he had means to stop it.

Then she hit the nail right on the head. He was one of them, and he wanted to tell her that she was wrong but that meant explaining why he was aligned with them and that would risk his cover.

And he didn’t even know her. She was just a girl who ended up on the same rooftop as him.

So, Jay remained silent. Heard her say that she didn’t have time for this and then step towards the ledge. Except the sentinel blocked her, and she backed off. The thing moved slowly towards the girl and Jay let out a sigh. Yeah well, it hadn’t been his idea either to run into her but here they were.

Jay spread his wings, catching the sentinel’s attention as the girl hid herself behind the small construct that held the rooftop door.

“Guthrie, Joshua.” The thing said. “Clearance level four.”
“Disengage.” Jay told it. “Gamma, five, epsilon, zeta, three.” He rattled of the code and he could hear the thing stop. So, he did have clearance over the new ones. Which was a relief. He moved behind it and opened up the access panel and pressed in another code on the pad to shut it down.

“You can come out now.” He called out at the girl. “This one won’t do much anymore.” He ripped out the gps tracker, crouched down and opened up another panel in its leg and got rid of that tracker as well. Then he got up, opened another panel in its lower back and pushed against the power source, making sure that it couldn’t be turned on remotely.

She needed to get off the roof, that was obvious. If she could slip away from it while it was entertained with Flyboy, she could potentially merge herself into groupings of people and eventually just…skip on home. Yep, that was a fantastic plan, if anyone wanted her opinion on the matter. If it weren’t for Sentinel’s ridiculous ability to fly she could have extended the underarm wings and coasted out several blocks. But no. Almost every model was capable of flight.

The bot spoke, it’s voice oddly metallic regardless of how the Services tried to design them.

Guthrie.

She knew that name.

Her brows pinched and -against her better judgement- she leaned forward enough to make out the silhouette of his back, wings flexed, watched him step toward the bot and then address it. That would definitely end well. Disen- what the actual hell? He rattled off a handful of numerators and the damned thing actually went into some type of quiet hibernation mode while Flyboy literally picked at its brain.

That meant bad things.

He had given in an order, clearance to boot, wings on his back. It was somewhat unusual for a mutant with an obvious physical trait to be out in the open even if they were on a rooftop above the city streets. He hadn’t seemed the least bit concerned about his appearance or the fact that she had seen him. Though, he didn’t seem too taken aback by her either. At least she kept the lower half of her face concealed, somewhat hidden. Rather than straight nose, square jaw, goddamn stubble on display for all the world to see.

“There’s a good story, right?” She lifted her chin and turned her focus up towards the sky, her head shaking slightly as if she could deny what her brain was supplying her with. “To go along with the wings and the fancy passcode.” There had to be something at least half worthwhile for a mutant to seek the ranks of Sentinel Services.

Especially when said mutant had mutant siblings that were very obviously not Service lackeys.

“It’s not exactly a Guthrie team effort,” she called back from her perfectly safe cover behind the stairwell access doorway. “Employment with the Services.” She clarified. Metal knocked against itself and she resisted the urge to investigate. The sound of wires snapping, she leaned back against the door. Her brain screamed at her to seize the opportunity and put the rooftop to her heel, but that awful bout of her curiosity reared its ugly head in regard to his name.

“Yeah, there’s a story… not sure it’s good though.” He told her, raising his voice since she hadn’t come out yet, and walking to the front of the sentinel and opening up the panel at the front and getting rid of the secondary power unit. Which didn’t make much sense to him to be up front but alas, he wasn’t the one designing these things.

He stopped taking the sentinel apart when she mentioned it not being a Guthrie team effort, being employed with the services. He sighed, lowering his head and rubbing his face as he tried to figure out why he wasn’t more bothered by the fact he had practically outed himself to her.

“I guess I’m telling that story after all.” Letting out another sigh, he moved to a panel on the sentinel’s upper arm, and dismantled another tracker.

“I got separated from my brother and sister, picked up by the Services…” He pulled on a few wires, frowning because it led to another power source somewhere in this metal body. “They tried to turn me, I let them believe they have.” He followed the wiring up the arm and to the back where he found another panel on its shoulder.

“I’ve been freeing mutants, saving them from SentS. And now…” He pushed at the panel, it opened and he found another power pack.

“Now, I’m going to give this to my brother so he can take it back to the resistance and they can use it for whatever.” After he made sure everything was disabled and wouldn’t active the moment it would enter the hide out. Since it was one of the newer models, they could just write it off as missing. Flawed. Or whatever. SentS wouldn’t cry over it. They would just make new ones.

“Maybe you could come out here and help me? I need to make sure it can’t be activated anymore, or tracked.” Because that would be very disastrous.

Of course there was a story, an explanation, an excuse. His calm demeanor had to amount to something at least. He had given no indication of chasing after her and she wasn’t dumb enough to think he hadn’t notice what or who she may have seemed like. She had kept her head ducked and her alias low enough to not register as much of an interest beyond perhaps a glimmer of what might have been captured of her on film. So he gave no chase, appeared no threat, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t one. The Services employed all sorts of individuals for very specific reasons.

Maybe the story was at least entertaining.

Guthrie.

He didn’t rise to respond right away when she clarified that she was in some way familiar with his name, and she wondered if he was considering a lie, the truth, or simply walking himself out of the situation. A hinge gave and she heard the sound of wires being removed, energy snapping in the air.

Separation from his siblings. There were so many of them that she wondered if he meant the two that seemed to share his genetic disposition to mutation, or the others that had been left behind. There had been a fourth though, at one time, or that had been a rumor once. Picked up by the Services, either forcefully or willingly he didn’t clarify.

Freeing…mutants. Cindy frowned, wondering how exactly someone like him accomplished such. Did he pluck them up out of cells and fly them wherever they chose? Like an air uber.

She perked up when he mentioned taking the Sentinel to his brother, and she tried to draw on her memories of Samuel Guthrie. They weren’t so far distant that she couldn’t remember the exact shade of blue his irises held. Almost azure, but more so cerulean. That was not the hue she had spied framed by Flyboy’s lashes. She reran the statement over in her head, aligned Sam with the resistance at least, and then wondered after Paige. Until he spoke again, asking if she would come out.

He was sort of asking for her help, when he had tried to offer his own to her. He had given it, even when she had balked at his initial attempt.

Shifting against the framing around the stairwell, she leaned sideways and peeked out at him next to the utterly still bot. It was strange to see one so oddly unmoving. Even when their limbs were calm, their heads would always slowly move as if constantly scanning their surroundings to for the mutants and supers they were designed to hunt. As thought they could pluck them out of thin air.

“And what exactly do you want me to help you with?” Playing bait to be sure he had deactivated it enough? Or lull her into a false sense of security in order to put her directly before the stupid metal construct? Turning further, she reached upward and set her fingers against the housing she was ducked behind and climbed upward until she could perch atop the flat ‘roof’. “You’re aligned with Sentinel Services.” She sighed. “Why should I trust you?” It was possible that she could be and was faster than him. It didn't matter that he could fly, he wasn't like a Sentinel that was equipped with programming and accessories meant to track someone. He would have to use his eyes, and push back against the simplicity of human error.

She braided her fingers and set her forearms on her thighs. “You’re sort of an odd one.”
