Genesis: DOFP [GUIDE] [Post #1]
GENESIS
DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

What is GENEsis: DoFP?
A Marvel RPG.

The schools that once stood have been disbanded and destroyed. Mutants have been hunted and exterminated, as has and is any person that possess the the X-Gene. Confiscating the work of Tony Stark, the U.S. Government - in a joint venture with Dr Boliver Trask - sought to create guardians that would stand between dangerous mutants and humans.

They were supposed to help make everything better. They were meant to protect humans, and rightly so, as with humans who are good and evil, there were mutants who were just the same. Those who wanted to help make the world better, and those that only wanted to inflict pain and watch the world burn. Perhaps it was fear that had prompted their embrace.

Like all things humanity tries to perfect, perfection gradually became frightening. Over time and technological evolution, the guardians became a form of police. Hacking of their software and altering of their protocols prompted guardians to not simply identify mutant threats, but identified mutants as threats, preemptively - qualities the government found it could appreciate and better. Mutants are sought to study and harvest their abilities to better the Sentinels. How they are treated, is not disclosed to the general human population.

Any perceivable threat is dealt with. Those whom were once deemed "super humans" and "super heroes", in a sense, also pose a threat and they have taken up the position of second most dangerous individuals if they fail to comply and conform. The question that most normal humans secretly pass between themselves in the quiet and the dark, is what happens when all the mutants and all of the supers are gone? Who, exactly, is controlling who? The world is slowly becoming a dire place to live.
For further background, please see this thread, as well as familiarize yourself the archives. This is optional, but may prove beneficial and is encouraged.

How-To
Getting Started
  • Read the background, write a biography and submit it.
  • Once it is approved, you can start posting.

Characters / Biographies
  • You may pick canon characters known from the comics or make up your own.
  • You may have up to 6 characters. You may also purchase 2 additional characters, for a total of 8 characters (we'd rather you play 1 character actively than play 5-6 and struggle to keep up). Character count is being discussed.
  • A biography should cover your character's past and give us an idea about who he/she is. Include a detailed description of the powers your character will have.
  • No Mary Sue's / Gary Stus (click on the link for an explanation of what these are). Make your character real! Give them weaknesses.
  • A canon character is one that already exists in the Marvel-verse. You have the opportunity to stay true to their origins, create your own take on them, or have a little of both in their biography.
  • Killing a character needs manager approval (canon and made up)

Powers
  • A list of powers may be found here along with the unique, diagrammed version here.
  • No telepathy as a power.* Empathy may be used, but is solely to read / alter emotions. Empathy does not enable your character to read intentions.
  • If you pick a canon character please use their original power.
  • Mutants ARE NOT accepted by normal people in the new future world of GENEsis and any blatant or huge displays of power are likely to attract unwanted attention. Superhumans are slightly more accepted by society than mutants.

*Telepathy, however, as a power, may be applied for when you're claiming Marvel canon only if the character in question originally does possess telepathy as a power. However, please be aware that the management reserves the right to simply remove the power from the character's scope if any kind of misuse or abuse is shown when playing.

No-no's
  • No simply EVIL!!! characters. (Of course you can have a character with a bad side that’s not a goody-two-show. Give them a past, give them depth, give them a reason to be like that.)
  • No black-listed characters (see below).
  • No clones or aliens unless approved by management.
  • No time travel or characters from alternate universes unless approved by management.
  • No characters that don't belong to the Marvel-verse (this means no Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc.)

The Playing System
  • GENEsis is a freeform RPG. This means you can act out your character's story to your liking. There may be incidents that affect all players somewhat, but these will be recognized by events or announcements.
  • If your idea involves additions or changes to the premise of GENEsis (aka: the New Morning incident), we kindly ask you to contact a Manager for approval of the storyline. If your storyline is adding completely new elements to this RPG then you only need to make sure those characters that are involved know what's going on.
  • Limited threads are for 2 (or more players) as stated in the first post only. Open threads are for everyone. Private threads are for the thread starter only.
  • GENEsis no longer has "character diaries" or scorecards. Instead every player is kindly asked to create a dosier for their character in this thread and keep it updated (this is mandatory for canon character to ensure that players picking up the character after you set it free can easily read up on them).

Abbreviations
  • IC - in character
  • OOC - out of character
  • NPC - non-player character
  • SL - storyline
  • FYI - for your information
  • Q/A - questions and answers

GENESIS
CANON USE AND REUSE

Claiming formerly played canonic characters.
  • A list of all those characters is here.
  • If the player has either set the character free or has been MIA for longer than three months the character is up for grabs. If the player is around, active but has not played a character in particular in three months, you may alert the management and ask for an assessment of the matter.
  • You are encouraged and meant to build upon what the previous player has established. (Ask for help i you feel you need it!! That's what we are here for.) This means you should look into the history (the biography is available and with it, the "Find all posts" link which lets you search for the character's IC posts). You can of course retcon the character's background BUT you still must account for what has previously happened to the character (and you should probably talk to those players with characters whose ties to the character in question would be severed by the retcon). This may appear like a lot of work to play a character but look at it this way. Even the artists and writers of the comics need to have some idea of the character they are using in their comics - even if they end up changing them completely.
  • The giving up / (re)claiming of old canon characters will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
  • Former players are encouraged to give up canon characters they don't feel 110% about. Don't horde the popular ones when new players might have more time and drive to play a certain character. BUT former players do get first call on the characters they've played before should they not have been claimed in the meantime.
  • With the shift into the future, veteran players are being given a time block to claim their old characters before they are released.

Note for all players: By submitting a bio for GENEsis for a canon character, it should be noted that you automatically agree to your biography potentially being used by another player if you are ever to forfeit the character for any reason. They immediately become part of the GENEsis canon.

In this game, the active players are given priority when it comes to canon characters. New players are encouraged to honour the work done by previous players, whether that comes in the form of a biography or a series of posts in the archives. That being said, the copyright of the original biography is to remain in the biography at all times and removal of the copyright will result in the loss of that character.

I'd like us all to remember that we're currently borrowing and expanding upon existing characters within the Marvel Universe, so these characters don't even truly belong to us.
