[In-Character] [Post #111]
Lucas and Harley had been out on the streets when they got the call about a possible sighting of the Winter Soldier. Local cops were in pursuit of the man and his partner. A blonde female. From what he understood, it could only be one Carol Danvers. The same Carol who had ditched his boss. The same Carol who was now listed as a wanted woman as well because SentS had declared her so.

Dangerous superhuman. Captain Marval aka Carol Danvers. Take in alive. When that APB had come through this morning, Nate had gone very, very quiet.

So, he and Harley had gone out, escaping the squad room for an hour before they would head back with coffee to make everybody happy again. Or for so far that was possible.

“We need to get up on the rooftops.” He told his partner who looked at him quizzically. “It’s what he does.” Lucas told her with a shrug. Hard to explain that he had studied casefiles and deducted the most logical thing for the man to do. “Come on.” He went into the nearest building, just their luck that they were in the same vicinity as the sighting.

Making quick pace upon the roof, he already heard gunshots. Taking out his gun, he rounded the corner and was met with the fugitives. “Stop right there.” He told them, shit it was Carol. “Raise your hand.” He waited for them to do so, having no delusions that if Barnes would charge him, and he got a shot off that it would bounce of that metal arm of his.

“Harley, call it in. Tell them we have the Winter Soldier and Captain Marvel.” Carol looked at him in surprise, and he couldn’t blame her. She had been outed and not in a very nice way. It didn’t sit well with him, because the APB hadn’t been clear on her crimes. What had she done? Why did SentS want her?

“Listen, Lucas, right? You need to let us go.” She pleaded with him and he shook his head. He couldn’t just let them go. Not with all those other cops around, they would pick him up next.

“Harley, what do you think?”
“I think the boss man will be displeased if we detained her. Him he wouldn’t mind.”

Always with the honesty, but he liked that about her. He could also see that if they only took Barnes in that Carol would do something stupid. It was in her stance, something was different. “Harley, maybe you should go make that call somewhere else.” Lucas could hear her sigh, knowing that he was about to do something very stupid.

“I can’t just let you go.” He now looked at the man next to Carol. “Come at me, hit me, I’ll fire off a few shots and we call it a day.” He eased on his stance. Knowing what would come next.

“Take the next roof, go down and escape through the alley. There’s a market going and you’ll blend in.” He saw surprise register on her face and it made him feel grimmer. Life as a super or mutant just wasn’t fair, but he would not help the Services take down one who hadn’t done any crimes.

“Come on. You don’t have much time before this roof is filled with more cops.”

Sometimes the cops acted fast. It was something Bucky had seen time and time again. Just that up until here, he had never found himself in a situation where a toll was to be avoided. Sirens were doubling and tripling. They were calling in every unit in the area. Well, that certainly would make things interesting, he figured as he pushed back up to his feet and continued the mad dash towards the next roof.

Carol went alone this time, and Bucky could clearly pick up on her strength waning. The distance had been about two feet too wide and she did struggle making it up. When Bucky’s feet hit the concrete he dropped, rolled before pushing back up. There was no doubt in his mind that forces were on their way up to meet them on the rooftop by now. So it was more out of precaution than actual cause that Bucky drew with his right hand.

Hoisting Carol back onto her feet, he spun back around and as the figure stepped out in front of them, Bucky’s arm came up, barrel trained at the man across from them. Ordered to stop, he still stepped closer to carol, his bionic arm pushing into the line between her and the cops. There were two now. More would follow soon. Bucky found himself in a tricky situation, suddenly so very aware how much of a distraction an ally could be in battle.

His face remained cold, fixed on the two figures across from them, while in his peripheral vision he made sure Carol was close to him. He could not charge ahead and diffuse the situation. A bullet to the hand of the fellow holding the gun, then one into his partner’s leg. Two punches and he would be out of here. Just that Carol at half-strength and injured was a number to add to this calculation. There was no question that none of their bullets could hit him, and even if they did – then he had a healing factor. Carol did not.

Despite being ordered to raise his hands, Bucky made no such move. His brows furrowed, eyes trained on the pair across from them, he was not very in favour of the idea of a small chat up here. “Carol …”, he said, under his breath, to remind her that they had to keep moving. And yet, there was the point that obviously someone was looking for them. What surprised him was that Carol knew the cop’s name.

What made no sense, however, was when the woman said that their boss would be unhappy about Carol’s detainment. Who were they working for?

Brakes screeching, guns being cocked. Noises that were faint but certainly rising up from the street level below. Bucky contemplated squeezing off a round, and then just throwing Carol across his shoulder. But it would slow him down, no matter how slender she was.

The female cop trotted off. Bucky’s gaze switched back and forth between the blonde leaving the scene and the dark haired fellow. Lucas. Now the man’s attention was on him. His words were clear, even if they still did not make much sense. Bucky heard the man out, looked back to throw a glance at Carol and then shrugged. The cop had a point. They were running out of damn time.

Bucky let his gun arm sink and the firearm swirl in his hand by 180 degrees. Holding it by the barrel he charged the man, the grip coming down hard against Lucas’s head. As the man went down, Bucky took his hand holding the service gun, he fired off a few rounds to produce gunshot residue then tossed the weapon. “SentS won’t buy this”, Bucky said coldly, and fired two rounds that tore gashes into Lucas’s upper arm. They knew his work. They maybe had not created his work, so to speak, but they had refined it. If this was real, the cop would be dead.

Another half clip of his own gun went into the ground and the area surrounding the spot where the guy and his partner had stood. Then he turned, bionic arm reaching for Carol and they were once more running. “You’re jumping with me again”, he ground out as he gauged the distance and measured his steps. Then once more, the both of them were airborne just as units broke through the rooftop entrances behind them.

“FREEZE!” – “NYPD!” – “DON’T MOVE!”

A whole lot of variations of the same thing. Bucky pushed Carol in front of him towards the door that would lead them off the roof. He raised his metallic limb behind them, head lowered, blocking whatever projectile came to close. He could feel one tear into the side of his lower left leg. Another went over his head a little too close for comfort. But other than that, he remained unarmed.

“Watch out!” he bellowed, already hearing steps coming up the stairs. Apparently a handful of beat cops had been smart enough to check the next building. Instead of racing down the angular staircase, he pushed his right arm around Carol’s midsection, grabbed the railing with his left and jumped over tearing the bars out from the floor.

It was four storeys down. Two covered by the railing, the last two had to go without. He tightened his hold on Carol, let go of the metal bar in a way where he pushed himself between her and the floor. His bionic arm took the brunt, the metal whirring to life as he broke both of their fall. The cops had turned, were in pursuit again. Bucky pushed Carol to her feet and towards the building’s back door.

He pushed out after her, turned and jammed the door’s locking mechanism with a single yank. He had lost his basecap somewhere on the way so he pulled the hood of the dark brown jacket up for now.

Then they were surrounded by people. It was the market cop guy had mentioned.

Carol shifted a little, trying to look around Bucky as he made sure that he at least was somewhat shielding her from Lucas who still had his gun trained on them. On her. Yet, when he started to discuss things with his partner about what she was thinking, a little spark of hope flared.

Of course, Nate would be displeased if they brought her in, although if he found out with whom she was hanging he probably want them to bring her in so he could yell at her for being an idiot. For being so reckless. Lucas ordered his partner to go make a call elsewhere, and the woman did as told.

If things couldn’t get any stranger Lucas just made them an offer, one where he would let them go. Bucky came into action and she saw Lucas go down with a loud grunt, his gun appeared in Bucky’s hand, shots were fired.

“Fuck!” Lucas yelled when Bucky shot him in the arm. “They would have bought it.” Lucas grounded out. Carol winced, walking over to Lucas. “Thank you.” – “I really didn’t do this for you, Carol.” And she let the words sink in. No, he had done this for Nate. And that was fine. He didn’t need more heartache. “You’re wanted. Your APB hit the streets this morning.” Lucas grounded out in pain. “SentS issued it.” She looked at him, nodding and then she was running with Bucky again.

He told her she would be jumping with him again and she was more than fine with that. More shouting, cops breaking through the rooftop door and as they landed on the other roof and Bucky pushed her in front of him. She could hear the bullets fly passed them, heard them connect with his arm. She ran down the stairs but more cops were coming up towards them. The moment his arm went around hers, she pushed hers around his neck to hold on. She had a pretty good idea what was coming next, but her heart still stuttered when he went over the railing, taking it with and then free falling the last two stories.

Carol grunted a little when they hit the floor, she was up on her feet in the next second and running for the back door of the building.

The moment she stepped foot outside they were surrounded by people. She reached for her inside pocket and pulled out a beanie to put it over her well known blond hair. Carol turned slightly, grabbed Bucky’s right hand in hers and started walking. “Act like we belong here.” She moved in closer to him. “And try not to look so angry.” Carol smoothed out her own face, put on a fake smile and weaved through the crowd.

It was amazing that nobody actually was surprised by all the ruckus made by the cops. It said something about New Yorkers and the times they were living in. Nobody was surprised to hear a gunshot anymore.

Scanning the crowd, she saw three cops heading their way, they were right in their path and she pulled Bucky towards one of the stalls that were selling nice silk scarfs. Carol knew that they would see them, that they would look right at them and they would have to start running again. So, she did the one thing that would make those cops not look at them. Turning towards Bucky, her other hand came up around his neck and she pulls his head down. Putting her lips against his. “Trust me and kiss me.” She murmured against his lips, hoping that he would just go with it. She would explain later if he hadn’t noticed the cops yet, which she doubted.

They were not out of the woods yet. Bucky knew as soon as they began moving forward. Of course, the cops had come down here, too. They were probably fanning out, drawing a line around the vicinity. So, they would have to find a way to sneak through, get behind that line. Then they were in the clear. Cops always worked a certain way.

As they snuck through the masses of people, Bucky spotted a stand with caps and hats not far ahead of them. Coming past, he bumped into a fellow looking at what was for sale and mumbled an apology. Then he looked up, pushed his hoodie down and put a black cap bearing the logo of the Brooklyn Dodgers on it. Now there was something he knew …

When she prompted him to act like they belonged, he just threw her a glance. His eyes took in the sight of her with the beanie. She took his hand and Bucky allowed himself to be pulled along. To not look so angry. He tried to return to his neutral facial expression but found it hard. They had to be careful. There were cops swarming the area.

And just as the thought had entered his mind, he saw them ahead of them. Three. Blue eyes scanned the area. Could they sneak through the stalls? Possibly into one until the patrols passed? But latter was barely possible – not with the way things were set up. Carol pulled him to one of the stands and Bucky wondered what her plan would be. Right now the only feasible thing he could think of was to either head the other direction or to cause some kind of distraction. Just that latter was tricky with the number of people in this place.

Bucky found himself turned around and he posed no resistance, his eyes instantly meeting Carol’s. There was a half smile on her lips, but as much he could see the determination. She pulled his head down, and he knew that she was not playing. She was working. Working to lose the cops looking for them. She prompted him to trust her, and … to kiss her. Bucky found himself pulling air in through his nose, momentarily torn between telling her to stop wasting time and simply going for it.

In his specific line of work, this kind of decoy usually was not required. He was not a spy. By definition, he was an assassin.

And yet, there was that tiny little voice prompting him to just go with it. That voice fuelled by the sliver of hope he had allowed to come to life earlier when asking her to come for him was he to be taken in. Part of him still wondered if she would break him out of cryo were SentS to get their hands on him again.

Bucky shifted gears, figuring that after he had basically pushed the both of them up until here – it was now time for him to let her take the lead. She was a woman, and women were so often capable of things men would not initially employ. He let a one-sided grin slip onto his lips, showing the white of his teeth. “Oh really”, he pushed out, letting the man who’d once joined the army to fight Nazis shine through.

He lowered his head, the bill of the cap obscured Carol’s face for the cops should they choose to be looking. Bucky slipped his arms around her midsection, letting his lips meet hers. For a moment, it all quieted down around him. Something flashed through his chest and he heard himself let a small moan slip out and into her mouth. He somewhat fisted his hand into the back of her jumper under her jacket.

The kiss was so much like the ones before; and he wondered whether this was simply the way in which he would always kiss this woman. Without haste, but with intensity and a deep sense of longing waking somewhere in his chest.

He pulled her upper body closer until she was just flush against him, and he could feel how easy it would be to forget what they were doing here – just what they were in the middle of right now. There was an APB out on her. SentS was looking for her. This morning the cop had said … this morning, when the both of them had headed back into town. Still, Bucky knew, there was something he was not seeing here.

Breaking the kiss, he felt his heart had picked up some speed. Bucky pressed his lips together, tongue darting out to take in what remainder of her taste lingered on the tender skin. “They’re gone”, he stated as he came up and stood tall again. “Let’s move”, he said, but his eyes remained on hers for a bit longer. There was something. It was becoming stronger, it lay between them and even Bucky knew it was mutual.

His brows furrowed a bit and he nodded once. “Me, too”, it was a whisper, barely audible. But she would surely be able to read it from his lips. Would she grasp what he was trying to say as well?

But before he could dive deeper and follow this train of thoughts, someone bumped into him. Bucky seized the moment, his hand slipping down to find hers and this time he was in the lead.

With determined steps but without going too fast, he guided their way through the market. He would take a left here, a right there. March toward a stand, then turn and make a beeline for another, right until he finally had the both of them on the fringes of the place – opposite of where they had come in.

Was there an underground station nearby? There had to be, he thought. “We have to get off the streets”, he ground out as they walked down the narrow alley leading away from the market.

[In-Character] [Post #115]
Some things barely ever changed. Nathan Coleman knew this. He would always love his little sister even if Jenna drove him up the damned walls. He would allow himself to trust because sometimes it was necessary to place your trust in someone to get them to trust you in return. And he would always, always recognise that gait, no matter what disguise she was under.

Nathan stood, arm outstretched and hand flat against a flag pole. His breath came in huffs, visible in the crisp air. He looked winded. A little bit like he had just run ten miles. Just that his gear did not match the idea of exercise. He wore jeans, a thick fleece jumper in deep blue and a police jacket on top. NYPD was printed on his back in big letters.

Images flashed through his mind as his brain did what it could to bring them into a coherent sequence. He was trying to make sense of them. But all he got was disjointed pictures. Carol Danvers in his arms, laughing and kissing him. They had gone out so many times. Four weeks and … not a day they had not seen one another. And then … first gone for two consecutive days, and then she vanished completely.

He remembered getting out of the shower that day – alone in his apartment, continuously checking his phone to see whether she had finally answered one of his countless texts. Bare feet hit the towel he had put on the floor and then he had seen it. And he had wanted to laugh and be relieved as much as he had wanted to throw something to smash that mirror.

The fogged up mirror. It held a message, written with soap.

Don’t look for me. Cover blown.

Carol’s handwriting.

So when the news had hit the station an hour ago, Nathan had been out and in his car mere minutes later. Then Harley’s phonecall had reached him in the car, and he had put on the siren and simply torn through the traffic.

And now here he stood, staring at an image his mind could not compute. Carol and Barnes. He could not get it out of his mind. The way her eyes had sought his just before she had allowed for him to kiss her. Nathan was no school boy. He was no teenager in love and now suddenly heart broken because his girl had kissed another guy. No. He was a man who had crossed the threshold of forty. He knew she was a spy. She had told him plenty about her life in the past fifteen years.

Nathan knew she could put up a front for anyone.

Just that her glance had not been a front. It was the way in which she had at one point in their lives looked at him with.

“Lieutenant,” someone called from behind him. “Lieutenant, are you ok?”
Nathan waved the man off. “Yeah. Should have stretched.”
“Danvers and Barnes appear to have left the place.”
Nathan’s eyes shifted to where he had seen them leave just moments earlier. “Really?”
“We’re not certain. One of the teams had them, but they disappeared in the croud.”
“They did not come through here”, Nathan said, his voice toneless.

It took her breath away when she saw that one-sided grin in his face, it lit up his face and brought out the man underneath all the training and programming. It made her heart stutter in her chest; his arms came around her and then he was kissing her back. The world stopped existing around them, her hand moving up his neck, her other on his chest, fisting his shirt. She had to remember herself that they were out on the streets. That they were running from the cops.

But the way he kissed her, it made her forget everything. Like there were no worries in the world, that they could do everything together. Her heart sped up, that flutter in her chest growing bigger and she knew, just knew that she could not part with him. Ever.

Was this what love at first sight felt like?

The kiss broke, breathless, her heart beating faster than before and she looked at him with longing in her eyes. This thing between them, it was new but it was strong and it was so palpable. He told her they were gone and she had to reset her brain to understand who he was talking about. Right, the cops. She took in a shuddering breath when he told her to move, but neither one did.

She looked at him, licking her own lips and tasting him there. Me too she barely heard it, but read it clearly from his lips. She nodded in agreement, a smile on her lips as she let his words warm her. It was mutual. He was feeling it too.

Carol’s hand found its way back into his and off they went. Weaving through the people, stopping at stands to not attract attention they finally managed to get at the fringes of the place. Bucky told her that they needed to get off the streets and she narrowed her eyes to get her bearings. Walking down the alley, they reached the end and she saw where they were. “There’s a subway station nearby.” She told him. She didn’t like the idea of being trapped in the underground stations if they found them there.

“We’re only a couple of blocks away from where we’re supposed to meet.” She was weighing the options. But a subway would be faster…

Carol was apparently no fan of going underground. While Bucky could most certainly understand the notion, he also figured it was their best shot. Too many cops were out and about – and if they seized the chance now, they would indeed slip through under the radar. Before the cops realised that they ought to cover the exit points from this place.

“Subway then”, he said in agreement as he let her guide the way.

Five minutes later, they stood on the platform standing ready for the incoming train. Reflexively, he had her turned against him, his own back towards the camera covering this part of the subway station. “Keep your head down. They’ll find us eventually on these cameras but let’s not make it too easy.” Bucky had his own baseball cap pulled down as far as he could.

When the train stopped, he pushed his arm around her shoulders and they walked to the opening doors. He had taken off one glove, the bionic arm was pushed into his jacket pocket. Just a guy, with normal guy-hands. No gloves, no titanium alloy.

The train was rather full, and Bucky leaned against the door, once more Carol in front of him. More so than displays of affection, he was after obscuring both of their faces. “You should do this meet on your own”, he said once more. “You should not let me near your contacts.” He breathed through his nose, his eyes shifting back and forth between hers as he sought understanding in her. Bucky wanted her to see reason. But then again, how was it supposed to happen?

He was unwilling to desert her side, the objective to keep her safe was as important in his mind now as it had been two days ago. And she had been struggling with even just the idea of letting him run interference when things got tight so she could escape. His gaze slipped up and over her head as he let it wander across the faces in this car. Everyone was busy with their phones, aside from another couple who was wildly kissing and a single fellow reading a newspaper. It made Bucky smile a little to think that kind of thing still happened.

“I know you don’t want to hear this, but you should be headed further out of town and not come back here…”

Subway. Okay. She guided him towards the entrance of the nearest one, walking down the stairs and buying tokens from the machine before they could head inside. All the while he was making sure that they weren’t noticeable on the cameras. She knew to keep her head down. “Agreed.” She told him when he told her to not make it too easy for the cops.

The train stopped, his arm came around her shoulders and hers went automatically around his waist. Just another couple entering the train, nothing to see here. It didn’t go unnoticed to her that it felt already so familiar, so easy to do this. Even if it was right now to stay out of the hands of SentS.

Carol found her place in front of him, her hand grasping his arm to keep herself from falling over as the train started to move. Looking up at him, she understood his apprehension of going to that meet and seeing whoever she agreed to meet there. But she didn’t want him out of her sight. It was weird to think that a few days ago she was running from him, being sure that he would take her out the moment he would catch up, and now… now all she wanted to do was plaster herself all over him and just the thought of being away from her made her chest ache.

There, another smile and it made her smile in return. He really should smile more, it made him look carefree. “It doesn’t matter where I go.” She sighed a little, answering him. “Here I can hide under his nose.” And you are here as well.

She looked around, her eyes falling on the other couple who were trying to eat each other up. Yeah, that made her smile too. Looking back at him, she stepped closer, her arm snaking around his waist. Carol looked up, deciding that for a few minutes they could be a normal couple. “Tell me something, anything. What’s your favourite food?” She gave him a smile, hoping that he would go along with this. “Mine is pepperoni pizza with lots of cheese.”

Carol sighed, and Bucky’s eyes followed her movements. She was considering his words, then shrugged, saying that where she went did not matter. That here, in New York, she could hide under his nose. Bucky did not quite see it that way. Because he wondered whether that might be exactly what SentS wanted. But Bucky decided against arguing. There was no point anyway. Carol had her own mind and she was old enough to make her own decisions and know the risks. So he just nodded.

Then she pushed closer and Bucky found himself appreciating the notion more and more. Her warmth, the way she smelled, the way she would look at him. What she prompted him for next surprised him. She could do that apparently. Then again, Bucky could truthfully say he had not seen a woman in at least fifty years.

She picked favourite foods, providing that her own was pizza. With lots of cheese. Bucky smirked, wondering whether there was a way to have pizza any other way. To him, pizza simply already implied ‘lots of cheese’. He stored the information away, and then contemplated his own. It took him a moment, yet when it came, his smile widened to something boyish, almost mischievous.

“Umm,” he started, casting his gaze down a bit before looking back up at her. “Desserts”, he said next and let the word just hang there. “Anything that’s sweet.” His smile remained as wide as it was, reminiscent of the man he had been before the accident on the train had torn off his arm and cost him the life as he’d known it. “Steve always found it somewhat decadent … his mom would have me over for dinner on a Friday, and … I’d eat the pudding first.”

He let his thoughts wander just for another moment. Then nodded, his face taking on a gentle and content expression as his mind dipped into memories of better times. “Sarah made the most incredible chocolate mudcake.” He pressed both lips together, still smiling and made an ‘mmmmh’ sound. “It was the best. And she’d always let me have it first.”

She waited patiently for his answer, looking up at him it took her breath away when she saw him smile. Not just any smile, one that came forth from recalling a memory. It warmed her, seeing that, seeing him return more and more to himself. Bucky Barnes. Hers. That made her pause for a moment… hers? Was he hers?

Her gaze met his when he told her that desserts were his favourite food, a smile curled on her lips. Anything that’s sweet. Well who would have thought that? It made her step closer to him, as he told her about Steve and Steve’s mom. How he ate the pudding first when he came over for Friday night dinners. She could see it. Could clearly picture him sitting at that table, talking and laughing while eating pudding while Steve just went about his meat and potatoes first.

Bucky told her more, told her about the most incredible mudcake Steve’s mother used to make and how she would always let him have it first. In that moment, Carol decided that she would try and make him one too in the future. If they ever found the time and she improved on her baking skills.

“She sounds nice. I guess Steve took after her?”

The train stopped, people got off and back on and the train started moving again. She stumbled against him, now flush against him but not stepping back to correct that.

“My father would have had a brain aneurism if we would have eaten dessert first.” She snorted. “He’s a real traditional man.” Or so she thought, she hadn’t seen her father in years. Her work had taken her away from her family and after what had happened to her she thought it easier for all of them to just not return home.

“I used to have a younger brother named Steve. He was much like your Steve, I think it’s why I got along so well with him.” Whatever had happened between her and her father, she had always remained close to her brothers.

She took in a deep breath, looking up at him her mouth quirked up in a smile. “So, a sweet tooth huh?” her other hand moved up his chest, until she could feel his heart beat against her palm. “I’ll have to remember that.” The train stopped again, people got off and back on and on it went again.

“Two more stops.” She told him, and hating that they would have to go back to being alert once more. She liked this, liked him opening up to her. Having a normal conversation. She wanted more of those, promising herself that she would make it happen.
