Into The Green [Laura / Julian] [Post #1]
Into The Green

Julian barely managed to get them all out in one piece. Thor had been kind enough to carry Kitty so he was left with Logan and Laura. After arriving at the theatre, he lost sight of Laura as he got shepherd into Jax his lab to get stitched up after they took care of Kitty first.

Julian was restless, wondering where Laura was hanging out and immediately fled the scene of the lab once he was stitched up and had proper bandages around his arm. He did not want to stick around when Kitty would wake up and see her husband.

So now he's looking for Laura. Being told by Jax that he should go for the roof.

Location: Roof

RULES
* For Laura [Fred] & Julian [Ellen] initially. Crashing is allowed.
* All GENEsis and Board rules apply.

Victor is there.

The one and only time she had crossed paths with him there, he had looked angry.

At least with Beth, it had been different. Better. Beth had found her, come down out of the attic and moved directly for her. As if she were important. Taken her face in her hands and then drawn her in. As if she mattered. She had bordered on breaking in that moment. How many times had she had to talk herself back up, convince herself that she was not going to die in that place, only to waver.

She had pushed her face into Beth’s shoulder. She had left the sleeve of Beth’s top damp.

She had never done that before.

The sunset was beautiful, the way she had let her mind wander to and recreate it in her head. The light slipping towards the horizon, the sky an ombre cascade of peach, pink, and red beneath the deep blue threatening to take its place.

It was…relieving, to see it, to hear it, to sense the other living beings in the building beneath her feet. It was relieving just to breathe in the fresh air that surrounded her. And she drank it in as though she were afraid it would evaporate out of her reach.

She lifted a hand and set it over her nose and mouth. Then she looked at her hand and let her claws slide forward for a moment, before drawing them back. The skin healed near instantly and she exhaled. Her emotions pitched, threatening to salt her cheeks, and she choked them back. Pushed them down and buried them inside of herself.

She had come up there to watch the sunset. Hard to accomplish with tears in one’s eyes.

Up on the roof, Jaxon had told him and Julian was sorta making haste towards it now. It sucked that he was in the basement and needed to get up all those stairs. He boosted himself a little with his telekinesis to move faster, and when he questioned himself about it he didn’t have an answer. Why was he in a rush to go see Laura?

Was it because she had looked like death when they had plucked her from that facility? Why was he so worried about her? Julian just shrugged it away, not really wanting to answer that right now.

He was just concerned. He could be concerned. Couldn’t he?

Yeah, of course he could be.

He was a lot of things but Julian could show empathy. Wasn’t a heartless bastard like some of them thought. Julian pushed himself, felt his stitches pull and winced. Great. He slowed a little to make sure he wouldn’t rip them and landed at the bottom of the stairs that would lead to the roof.

Taking the steps two at the time, he pushed the door open and was met with a glare to his eyes. The sun was setting. Holding up his good arm, blocking out the rays he saw her standing at the edge.

He slowly walked towards her, stopping when he was standing next to her.

“I want to ask, how’re you doing but …” He shrugged. “It’s kinda obvious though.” Julian said, looking at the sunset with her. He didn’t need to be an empath to know that she had gone through hell and that that wasn’t over yet. He was still having nightmares himself.

“I… eh… understand what you went through.” His hands flexed, his bionic hands. God, was it always this hard expressing your thoughts? Being vulnerable?

She wasn’t sure if she could remember the last time that she had really felt the sun on her skin before that day. There had been numerous others where the bulbs in the cell had been changed out for uv enhancing, but that was artificial, and nothing like the warmth that reached out form halfway across the solar system. She had lost count of the time after the first four hundred and twenty-seven days. That was when she had felt herself willing to just turn in on herself.

And then Thor had arrived.

For a while, he had helped alleviate the time again, help her wasn’t to keep track of the hours. But as his own outlook, dwindled, she had fallen back once more. Counting had become mundane and pointless. Kimura’s words in her head that no one was coming became almost a mantra that her own doubt sought to cling to.

She could smell him before she heard him, bottom of the stairwell as he paused. There was blood, ever so faint, no longer hers, not when her body had metabolized through the inhibitor and her healing factor had taken its rightful pace. There was no syringe pressed to her neck to temper it back down. She could push the claws out form between her knuckles until she was blue in the face and the flesh would heal over, every time.

The door opened, but she held her place. There was no point turning to face him when he took strides long enough to reach her with ease. And then he was beside her. Julian Keller, the boy from school. She could still remember turning away from him in hallways, and ducking into rooms to avoid him when she had felt the threatening rise of heat flushing into her face. He had made her feel…

And now…

She turned slightly when he finally spoke, something about wanting to ask how she was, only to digress. He understood, and then she looked up at him, searching his face, wondering what he knew, what he felt. When he lifted his arms from her sides, she leaned closer to him to inspect his bare hands, and she realize din that moment as she cut her memories back, that he had had gloves on when they had left that compound.

Without much consideration, she reached towards him slowly and set a finger against one of his palms, sliding it carefully towards the tip of the index finger. “Do they cause you pain?” She asked, genuinely curious. “Who did this to you?”

Why had he forgone his gloves again? He never went without them but in this case… right, he had taken them off downstairs with Jaxon who wanted to run diagnostics on his hands while stitching up Julian’s arm and in his haste, he had forgotten the gloves.

His haste to go find Laura.

Well wasn’t that a little awkward. He wasn’t a self-conscious man but looking at his hands, what he had lost… it did something to him. And he didn’t like that. He didn’t want to be vulnerable, not make people see the real him. He had bared himself too much already to those lab coat freaks. Enough in a lifetime.

But when she touched his hand, her finger dragging a path from his palm to the tip of his index finger he could barely restrain a shudder. It tingled. And where he once was very adamant in that he hated the feel of being touched or do the touching with his hands, right now he was reconsidering that. Fuck.

“At first when I got them, yes. Now not so much. Just phantom pains once in a while.” He told her, watching how she traced the bionics. It was mostly mesmerizing.

“Those assholes at Sentinel Services.” He growled, pulling his hand away from her and sticking them in his jeans pockets. Hiding them away once more. “They took my hands, Forge gave me a new pair.” He shrugged, like it was nothing but who was he fooling? He still had regular nightmares about waking up without his hands. It was most definitely not nothing.

“Are you hungry? I think they are prepping food in the kitchen for us.”

The old Julian would have shrugged off her concern because he didn’t need or want it. He allowed her the moment, and he allowed her the questions she posed, growling out a response that she had already assumed. Sentinel Services. They had at some point had him, but he had escaped, or had been set free. She wondered how he had managed his freedom. Julian had a useful mutation that would have served him well if he had been granted access to his abilities for even a moment.

She knew the concept of phantom pains or sensations. Every time they had tried to cut something off of her, she had still felt it as though it were attached. The pain itself was different, she could work to block that, but the sensation of feeling your hand when it was severed and across the room was…odd. She thought of the left arm that Kimura had cut from her clean off the morning she had finally been taken away and considered the time it had taken to completely reattach. Julian did not possess that ability. Yet she wondered if he had had her blood in his body when his had been taken, if they could have been reacquainted. Odd thoughts.

When he tugged his hands out of contact with her and buried them in his pockets, her skin prickled in response to the sudden loss. That had been what she had initially expected. Julian Keller, too good for someone’s concern. Forge had given him a new set, bionic. She wondered if Sentinel Services had thought his powers only worked with his hands.

She looked up at him when he mentioned food. Beth had practically dragged her into the kitchen once she had been discharged from the medbay as her body had worked to repair itself. There had been anger on the other woman’s face when she had confessed that she had not been allowed to eat for a week. Beth had set to fixing her eggs, and toast, sliced up apples and bananas. She had made her sit and put the plate in front of her, then flittered about commenting on making spaghetti, because surely she would eat that as well.

“Yes.” She gave a nod. It was odd to be able to make that decision for herself. It was stranger still to be asked about what she wanted. She wanted to apologize for making him uncomfortable about his hands, but she wasn’t sure how to broach the subject without potentially offending him further. “They are nice.” She finally said. “I had not even realized in the compound.” Even if he had been wearing gloves. That meant he was adapting well to the prosthetics, though if Forge had fashioned them, they were likely as perfect as they could be.

“Thank you.” She told him, looking up at him once more. The threat of her emotions tickled her throat. “I was not who you sought on that mission.” She knew that she wasn’t, not once she had seen Kitty reunited with Thor. “But you did not leave me behind.”

He regretted reacting like that, but it had been impulse. Hide away the things you don’t like about yourself and ignore that they existed. It’s why they had found him an asshole in school. He hadn’t cared, not really but right now he didn’t want to be an asshole to her. Not after what she had gone through for all those years.

Julian just nodded when she agreed on being hungry. He had burned a lot of energy himself, so he could eat. A lot.

Then she complimented him on his… hands? And he did not know what to say. Nobody told him his hands were nice, hell nobody even mentioned the fact that he had bionic hands. It’s why he wore the gloves, so they wouldn’t come up.

But he didn’t mind Laura doing so. No from her he wouldn’t mind if she complimented his hands at all. “Yeah I wore gloves. Usually do.” He said in answer that she hadn’t noticed in the compound.

He swallowed when she thanked him, looking down at her when she looked up at him. He saw the emotion and something stirred within. Julian just wanted to hold her and …

“We knew going in that there would be more. We still left plenty behind…” He reflected on that, knowing that other levels still contained mutants but they just cleared the one Thor had been on. “… We don’t leave anyone behind, Laura. Ever.” He did something very uncharacteristic and held out one of his bionic hands for her to take.

“Come, let’s go grab some grub.”

Usually wore gloves. It did not surprise her, honestly, not when she took into account the younger version of him that she could remember. He had always been quick to dismiss anything that might bait his emotions to the forefront for people to peek at. His hands as they were would call to questions and then the potential for sympathy, and he hadn’t earned his codename by being the sort to bask in anyone’s pity.

Something in his features shifted when she thanked him, and she wondered when the last time someone had. He had done as she had asked. He had freed her from the prison she had been locked in for so long, and he had taken her with him when they had left. He had given her something she had dreamed about for years, because she had asked it of him. If she hadn’t been willing to leave, he might have left her, or he may have forced her to go against her will.

Her eyes fell to his shoulder, the one he had been shot through and wondered how it felt to remain open and raw, to be stitched up and have to wait for time to mend such an injury. He had gotten that there.

They had left others behind. But they had been such a small group. They hadn’t been meant to completely unhinge the compound she had been kept within. Those that remained would either be moved soon, or the security would be increased. She would gladly return with another team, she would gladly risk her own freedom to bring others back out into the sunlight. Though, the mutant standing beside her may have words with such a decision after he had risked himself and the previous mission by helping her out of it.

When he held his hand out towards her, she looked down at it, and then up at him. He had torn them away from her inspection as though he hated being reminded that they were part of him, yet he was once again allowing her near them. She slipped her hand against his, letting a few of their fingers interlock, and then she followed him back inside, her eyes on the sky until it was completely out of sight, she relied on his direction and balance to some degree. Once they were beyond the door, she fixated for a moment on his shoulder and just felt his hand linked with her. It was so simple, touch, touch that no intent to cause harm, or damage, or pain.

The kitchen was thankfully deserted once they arrived and she released his hand in order to move directly towards the large pot on the stove. The contents had been ladled out multiple times already. “I don’t…” she glanced briefly at him over her shoulder as she opened the cupboards directly beside the stove only to find spices, “I do not know where anything is at.” She confessed as she moved onto another cupboard. “Uhm…” Well, at least she knew where the crackers and apples were kept. Then she chuckled, just because she could.

It was strange, holding someone else their hand. He hadn’t done that much in his lifetime and he hadn’t made a habit out of doing so after he had grown out of it with his mother. Not that she was the hand holding sort but it had been nice when she had. So when Laura, interlocked her fingers with his he couldn’t really place the sensation that it was causing him.

Instead of paying too much attention on it, he started walking back inside with her behind him. It hadn’t gone unnoticed that she had her eyes on the sky until they were back inside. He had pretty much done the same after being locked up for four years.

Julian guided them to the kitchen and was semi glad that nobody had decided to interrupt their little walk. The room was empty but there was a large pot on the stove.

The moment she let go of his hand, he felt loss and he wanted to grab her hand back. Instead he just shoved the hand back into his pocket and watched as Laura roamed through the kitchen. It amused him to see her go through things, not knowing where things were.

He smiled and decided to help her out, no matter how cute this was looking. “Bowls are to your left, second cupboard. Cutlery can be found in the drawer left from the fridge.” Julian stepped forward but found himself up against the wall within seconds.

“Why do you smell like my niece?” A voice growled into his face. “Did you touch her?”

“Fuck you, Victor.” Julian growled back. “She’s an adult, she can decide on her own if I touch her or not.” That got him another vicious growl in his face, and he half realised what he had just said to the man.

She hadn’t been there long enough to notice everything. She knew how to leave the building leisurely or with haste, she knew how many doors there were on the main floor, how many windows. She knew where everyone slept, not on visual cues or evidence, but based on the potency of their scents blended so thoroughly with the textiles of their bedding.

The instructions he offered were beneficial. Bowles and it appeared mugs were clustered with them in the cupboard he referenced. Then the flatware was exactly where he had indicated, and she wondered how long he had been there.

She hadn’t heard Victor so much as she had scented him, though she had had to pick it apart, trying to discern it from the other man, the one she had seen in the compound.

Victor snarled and snapped his teeth, a body was shoved up against a wall. A pair of accusatory questions offered and Julian snapped back with near equal measure. She tilted her head at the way he strung his words in reply together back at the other man. It was curious formatting, and she simply stood there somewhat dumbfounded for a moment with a glass bowl in her hands.

Drawing her mind out of the directions it threatened to split in, she dialed herself directly into Victor. She set the bowl down quietly on the counter and cleared the meager distance between them.

Rather than lashing out, she lifted her hand from her side and set it against her uncle’s upper arm, letting her fingers fold around the flexed appendage with care. “You have said more words to him than you have to me.” She pointed out calmly. She tugged subtly on the sleeve of his shirt, half wanting to pull him away from Julian, half wanting to pull his focus to her because he hadn’t really given it yet.

How many years had it actually been and he hadn’t even asked her anything yet.

He had been freed while she had remained confined. Even as he had snarled at her for falling behind, she had insisted that he take himself far away from that place, that she would wait, that she could wait. Because her mutation would give her the potential to wait for so long without time seeming to physically affect her. Her mind, though, that was different.
