Cait took another bite, listened to Paige tell them that Ben finally settled after Gabe had left to go after her. She knew what that meant, knew what Ben could do and that he could feel the energy shifts. Cait leaned into Gabe, her hand dropping under the table and placing it on his leg. She needed the contact.

Paige went on to explain what she meant, Gabe interrupting where possible and she just shoved another slice into her mouth. Alex stepped in as well, and she could hear the pride in his voice and she smiled around her pizza. He sounded so much like Gabe when he was beaming about something the twins had done.

“All my connections were cut. The one with hers…” Cait sighed, smiling slightly. “… it’s somewhat different due to her own abilities.” And she had no idea how to fix it, how to not screw her own daughter up and making her so dependent.

“No side effects. Just no abilities, well not all of them.” Her GPS was back up and running, a grin on her own face when she saw Alex figuring that one out on his own. Her connection with Gabe was running stronger though, probably why she wasn’t feeling as cold as before. Then again, he had always been there even as the slightest dot when her abilities were gone. “The baby is probably helping, just like Ben helped you.”

Cait took another bite from her pizza and Alex asked about Jax, what was going to happen and where they had put him. “We’re going to fix him.” Cait told him. “He’s family after all.” Even if it wasn’t through blood, it still held true. “I’m sure once Elise is recovered enough, she’ll be going through his programs and doing her thing.” Because the girl was in love with Jax, and she would do anything in her power to get that man back on his feet.

The box on top was fine. When she flipped open the lid and found red peppers and pepperoni, she immediately dove in, eagerly lifting a piece and stuffing the pointed end into her mouth. The gods never ate ambrosia. It had been pizza. Anyone could fight her on it.

Not reaching across the table to smack Gabe upside the head was only managed because of the pizza in her hand. Was he really that dense? ‘Across a building’ was not as far as he thought it was, and she imagined given the surge that had had Ben in such a fit, that her son could have picked up on the charge from a mile away or better. She had never felt him shake quite like he had then, as though he could draw on whatever Gabriel was expelling, but had had no idea what to do with it.

Alex slid himself into the discussion to clarify, talking Ben up and how he was sure it had been their technically still toddler that had stabilized him through the reemergence of his own abilities once Rogue’s tranquilization had started to wear off. It had Alex on cloud nine that his son was capable of such a feat, and it had her on pins and needs that her baby was already pushing so far ahead with whatever manifestation was going to take root. What it would turn into someday, she was almost too afraid to consider.

She reached for another piece of pizza and hastily chewed away half the slice.

Caitlin confessed the split in her abilities, the sudden absence and the loss that had likely taken Lexie. She wondered if it was akin to having a hand the girl could constantly reach for, suddenly torn out of her grasp. When she thought about it that way, that Caitlin and her daughter were so well enmeshed with one another, she could understand the sudden severance. She wondered if it was like that for all -pathic individuals and those closest to them, more definingly their children. A constant tether.

Gabe’s hand on the table curled slowly into a fist at the mention of Jaxon, and she wondered if it was related to panic, anger, frustration, or something wholly other. Someone he considered a friend had been seemingly hijacked by outside sources, then had made off with his wife. And if Wanda’s head was on right, it had everything to do with the baby. Some programming had instructed some version of Jaxon to take Caitlin because she was pregnant. Someone within Sentinel Services wanted her because she was pregnant. A mutant pregnant with a mutant child. The thought made her swallow, rather uncomfortably.

She turned somewhat towards Alex, even as her fingers tugged gently on the edge of her pizza box and she considered another slice. Her gaze homed in on his mouth, because she loved that mouth and everything it was capable of, and then she made herself look up further. They needed to be more careful.

They were going to fix Jaxon, Elise would poke at his coding. She gave an absent nod of her head. It wasn’t Jaxon’s fault that he was susceptible to programming created by an organization that had once had its claws buried within him. She had known him long enough to not jump to any ugly conclusions. The patience that he offered Ben when the little boy nagged him with a dozen questions in any one go, spoke volumes about what his character was truly like. That she had even found him sitting in a circle with Ben and the twins while they passed around a book to read out of and he had taken his turn…Jaxon was not the enemy.

She lifted her hand in a fist and brought it down on Gabe’s loose fist, flattening his hand. “I will punch you in the face if you don’t relax.”

He scowled at her, looking down at her smaller hand atop his. Then his features shifted. ‘What is that?’ he mouthed as he eyes her hand.

“None of your beeswax.” She cleared her throat. “Elise is useful like that.” She hummed as she picked another slice of pizza out of her box, half the pie gone. “She’s good with all that tech…stuff.” It went somewhat over her head. “SentS has dossiers on all of us.” She told them. “Codenames, pros, cons, approximate ages.” She looked to Cait. “I imagine yours will read ‘knocked up’ for the foreseeable future.” A slip of a chuckle escaped her.

Then she sobered. “What’s the plan with Rogue? She going to live in the basement until she’s old and gray?”

It was surprising how much pizza she was still able to shove into her body, after eating a full plate of left over Amazing 66. Okay given, she had been hungry but this hungry? It was like she needed to refuel herself to accommodate getting back her abilities. Like her body was telling her it needed the energy for when everything would come back. She just hoped it wouldn’t be all at once.

So far, her GPS was back up, and her empathy was slowly kicking back in. Picking up fragments from the people around the table. Including her husband who was being told to relax or get a fist to the face if he didn’t.

That made her snort, the hand she had on his leg squeezing him softly. Cait’s gaze drifted to Paige’s hand on top of Gabe’s and she cocked her head, nibbling on her pizza slice.

Was that a…? Her eyes narrowed, looking from Paige’s hand to Alex and back and then back again to Alex. She gave their connection a tug, waited for him to notice it and look at her before pointedly staring down at Paige’s hand before the woman pulled it back to grab another slice of pizza.

“Yeah, Elise is real good…” Cait sarcastically mused, knowing perfectly well that the other woman was diverting the topic to something else.

“I would be really disappointed if they didn’t have dossiers about us.” She just had to tackle one of the two alone at some point, clearly, they weren’t going to talk about that mystery ring right now. Although, she could guess what it meant and that just made her happy for the both of them. “I doubt that. I’m not showing and unlike with the twins, I’m not going outdoors until the baby is born. I don’t want a repeat from tonight.” She sobered up quickly, thinking about how it could have turned even worse.

Being captured, her baby taken from her… tests, torture, no Gabe, no kids…

“Ah, yeah, Rogue… Thing is, she’s been under their thumb for a long time. Not sure how easily we can break that. Might need to ask one of our resident telepaths for some help.” Caitlin took another bite from her slice, shifting herself just enough so she could lean against her husband. “She’s so angry all the time, it’s giving me a headache.” And underneath there was this layer of grief that Rogue didn’t want to give in to.

Alex almost choked on his pizza when Paige put her hand onto the back of Gabriel’s. Her left hand no less, and fingers that had never worn rings before held that one single silver band. It stood out like a beacon of light in the dark. Alex reached for his beer, and washed the pizza down to not choke on it and slip into a coughing fit.

Paige brushed him off, when Gabriel inquired about it. But Alex looked up in that moment, finding Caitlin’s eyes on his face. He snapped his mouth shut, took another bite from his pizza as her eyes silently bore into him. Alex could not help the smile that was spreading on his lips. Like a little boy who had just gotten the icecream he had been promised. It was not just a smile, he was positively beaming and he knew it.

Alex had to watch it to not erupt in laughter when Caitlin commented on Paige’s obvious change of topics. So, cat was out of the bag then? Well, that went quicker than expected. And yet, aside from maybe Scott, Alex could not think of anyone beside the two sitting at this table with Paige and him now that he would have liked to tell first. A pleasantly sensation of satisfaction spread in his chest and Alex let the relaxation wash over him.

Family. This was his family.

He looked up when Caitlin continued, and the idea of having a pregnant woman holed up inside for the better part of nine months made him frown. But he could understand the reservation. The idea to have the services take her, and actually succeed… What did they do with the children? And with the mutant mothers? The images and ideas his mind supplied by way of answer were daunting at best.

Then the topic fell to Rogue, and Alex nodded. He still had not gone to see her and he doubted he would. Somehow he felt much better with the plan to keep Paige, Ben and himself away from her as much as possible. “A psi-block”, he suggested. Of course they had Jon’s suppressant to administer but they could not force feed that one once a day with those pills. “Should block her powers …” he shrugged. Thinking back to the image of Cait being holed up inside the theatre, an idea occurred to him. “What about a psi-block to prevent her from leaving? If it can block her powers … why not her ability to leave and rat us out?”

Alex took another large bite from his pizza slice and then finished it off, sitting back.
