At least he wasn’t alone on what a barrette was. Thank god, for that. He grinned at her and loved it how her hand slipped into his, a perfect fit. They started walking, getting closer to the east side entrance when Megan showed up again. He saw something shiny in the girl’s hand but she didn’t stop. And then Laura told him it apparently wasn’t as important as Megan had made it out to be.

Julian had a smile on his face, watching Laura slightly pull him forward towards the exit. It was cute, especially when she halted and nervously told him that she didn’t know where they were going. He laughed softly, pushing open the door and feeling her grip tightening around his hand.

“No worries, it’s just straight ahead. Can’t miss it.” He lifted their hands, gave hers a kiss and guided her through the door before following her and falling in step with her.

He took in a deep breath, still had that stupid grin on his face and he was still holding her hand. Things were looking up for once. And they were going to get tacos. He felt his phone vibrate again, taking it out of his pocket and seeing he had yet another text message from growly face.

I’ll feed you your hand if you don’t get it out of hers.

That made him grin even more, and like hell that he was going to let go of Laura’s hand. Was the old man following them? If so, he was sure Laura would pick up on it though. He put his phone back and took a deep sigh. “What did you miss the most? For me it was sleeping in, cinnamon roll pop tarts and taking a god damn shower whenever I wanted.” He told her with a half grin.

“And this.” He held up their hands again. “Touch. Just simple touching things.”

Straight ahead. He made it sound so simple, so close, and she wondered how many times he had been there, if at all. But then he lifted their clasped hands and pressed a kiss against the back of hers. For a moment, she fixated on the sight and the sensation prompted the skin of her arm to break out in goose flesh. When he moved, she followed. It took conscious effort to not overstep him, but she found that when she let it happen, it set something about her at ease.

She was aware of him drawing his phone out of his pocket and noted the grin that split his lips. She wanted to ask but stuffed her curiosity back. If he wanted to tell her, then he would.

What did she miss the most? She chewed at the inside of her cheek as she considered the few things that she had missed. She missed simple things. He listed a few things and she logged them each away, finding rather quickly that she agreed with two of the three given examples. Sleeping in and a shower whenever. She wasn’t keen on the poptarts, though she had never had them before.

Then he paused again. This. He lifted their joined hands. Touch. The sentiment shared was entirely reciprocated. That she was still holding his hand beyond the moment she had taken it… it made her feel safe? Content, warm.

Connected.

Someone else beyond the fair few people that she had been bound to long before bars and glass had segregated her from anyone else. Victor. Beth. Paige.

The shop was close.

Julian reached for the door and drew it open so she could step through to the inside foyer. It was little and simple. They were met quickly and taken to a tiny little booth and brought water without being prompted. Menus were left to be looked over. He had been entirely spot on with the fact that they had numerous types of tacos and she suddenly felt incredibly overwhelmed.

“Chocolate.” She said as she scanned the menu. “I lived the first sixteen years of my life never knowing what chocolate was.” She told him as she set the menu down. It was Paige’s fault. She had introduced it to her first. Brownies. “I missed that.” It sounded weird that she missed chocolate, when she had already told him that she had missed tacos. He missed showers. She lifted the menu back up when she thought of him showering.

Julian opened the door for Laura, letting her walk through first and then following her. He had been here before, earlier today to stake the place out and make sure that they couldn’t get ambushed. She hadn’t been out ever since he rescued her, and he didn’t want this evening to end up in bloodshed.

They were brought to their booth, and he slid in next to Laura. The girl returned with water and menus, he took one from her and was still amazed by all the options they offered. Even that ridiculous spaghetti taco from that old kids show on Nickelodeon. Insane, just insane.

Julian looked up from the menu when Laura spoke. She had missed chocolate. Not even knowing what it had been at the start of her life. He made a note of that. He was going to get her all the chocolate she wanted and then some. Because she had missed that. Nobody should have to miss out on chocolate. That was a crime on its own, he figured.

She dove back into her menu, a grin spreading on his lips as he figured she was recalling something that wasn’t up for repeat. Her cheeks got that slight blush, giving it away.

He looked back at his own and his eye lingered on number twenty-three, the double crusted stuffed with cheese between the shells, seasoned beef, extra cheese, spicy ranch and lettuce. His mouth already started to water just thinking of taking a bite out of that. Going for tacos had been a great idea.

“Did you see anything you want?” He asked her, closing his menu because he was most definitely going for twenty-three. Maybe even order two of them.

Was it weird that most of the things she could think up initially about missing were food? She nibbled at the inside of her lower lip as she continued to read every option offered. There were so many combinations and just odd tacos. Spaghetti tacos. Squash tacos. Tofu tacos. All right, she had had tofu plenty when she had been young, it had been an easy way to pack extra nutrients into the diet provided for her, but she had never realized the versatility of it until she had stepped foot outside the Facility. Tofu tacos, though?

“I think I would like to try their carne asada tacos.” She decided. They had been delicious when she had first had them in La Jolla, California. She was currently on the other side of the country from that restaurant, and she wondered if it still stood, so she would need to sample them at the current establishment for comparison. “I might like to try the tofu tacos at a later date.”

That damned word.

She smiled at him when she shifted enough to look at him beside her. “Perhaps fish tacos at some point as well.” She added as she looked back at the menu and touched her finger next to the number twelve.

Normally she had no issue carrying on a conversation with anyone. With Julian, she was grasping, considering what was fair game and what posed the potential to make her feel foolish. A strange combination that had her biting back the flustered sensation that intermittently fluttered through her belly. Her fingers slipped around her water glass and she lifted it up for a deep drink, appreciative of the lime wedge that had been plopped in prior to being filled. She was further grateful when the waitress returned to the table to take their orders.

When she looked at the handful of other people present, she noted them all dressed in jeans and pants, and struggled not to frown at the fact that Megan had coerced her and then squeezed her into a dress. “Apparently Megan has not visited a taco restaurant recently.” She pursed her lips. “I feel that perhaps her suggestion for dressing was a bit over the top.”

The waitress returned with a basket of tortilla chips and a bowl of salsa that had her brightening once more, reaching for a pair of chips that she immediately dunked and then shoved into her mouth. She swiped at the corner of her mouth to gather the salsa that attempted to escape, then pushed it in between her lips.

“Did you find the next movie?” The next Jurassic film.

Julian found himself staring at Laura, his eyes on her face as she perused her menu and decided on carne asada tacos. He nodded in approval, took his glass of water and took a sip from it. “Tofu tacos?” He asked surprised, it sounded silly but there must be a reason why she wanted to try those. He smiled though, because she wanted to go on another date with him.

She was gorgeous to look at it, her smile lighting up her features as she looked at him. How he had been such an idiot back in the day for not seeing this. For not seeing her. They had barely spoken at school, and if they had it had been him teasing her to no end.

Yeah, he truly had been a moron back then.

“We could just order those to go after dinner.” He told her, as she pointed out another taco version she would wanted to try. It was like he had brought a kid to the candy story, and in a way he had. Because she hadn’t had tacos in forever. He took another sip from his water, while Laura pointed out that Megan hasn’t visited a taco restaurant recently since she felt overdressed right now.

Julian shook his head. “I really like that dress. I like that you’re wearing it for our date.” He gave her another smile. “You look amazing.” He added, trying to reassure her.

A basket of tortilla chips and salsa were placed on their table, and her face lit up even more. It was amazing to see how she just enjoyed the food, and he realised that he should start enjoying these kinds of things more. He lifted a hand, using his thumb to wipe away a bit of missed salsa from the corner of her mouth.

“Yeah I found it. It’s in my room, waiting for us to be watched when we get back.” He told her, grabbing a few chips of his own when the waitress came back and took their order. Their menus were taken away as well and he sat back a little, looking at her. “Gabe had been hogging it, had to bribe him to lend it to me for the evening.” Had cost him two pizzas and an order of Mongolian beef.

And babysitting duty in the near future. If he didn’t like those kids so much he would have backed out and found another copy elsewhere.

But he hadn’t.

“I think he took advantage of the situation though, he’s making me babysit his kids at some point.” Julian grinned at her.

Ten years prior to the current moment, she would have never considered herself anywhere alone with Julian Keller. There were a handful of other tables in the little restaurant that sported patrons, but they were still so far away from where she sat with him next to her. She had assumed he would have sat across from her to better facilitate a conversation, but she liked him just where he was, having slid into the booth after her as though his presence could somehow shield her from outside their tiny little bubble.

“Thank you.” She smiled, even as she tried to look back at the table when he complimented her on the dress Megan had chosen, went further to tell her he was glad that she had worn it. For their date. They were on a date. She felt her pulse skip ahead several beats, settling the moment his thumb touched against the corner of her mouth.

He drew back and assured her that he had acquired the movie, and she smiled again. She had been thinking about the open ending the previous film had allowed for, and all the potential storylines that it could have branched off in. That Gabe had apparently been ‘hogging’ it, was not in the least bit surprising, oddly.

She tilted her head expectantly when he confessed that he had to bribe the other man to release it, her brows lifted and her smile shifted encouragingly. Exactly what had to be offered in sacrifice or payment? Food, probably.

Babysitting duty.

A short chuckle bubbled out of her at the idea of him babysitting. Granted, the twins weren’t newborns, could speak, and likely were capable of managing themselves without anyone’s interference. But that he had agreed added to the weight of the moment she had already considered. This was not where she would have ever thought her life would have taken her. Captivity aside because the start of her life had basically been spent similarly, they were so far afield.

She would have become an instructor, she was sure of it. She would have stayed fast to the school, intent on assuring any other younger mutant after her that they were not alone, no matter how different or threatening they thought that they were, that their abilities posed and could grow to be. The threat of any single mutation was dependent upon the body that wielded it.

“I will help you.” She offered. “Perhaps the twins like tacos.” They could order and carry out back to the theater whenever Gabriel decided to call in his payment. “We could read, color, play hide and go seek, watch a movie.” All the things she had learned about after those years had been behind her. “It would be fun.” She was sure of it. What could possibly go wrong between him and her with a host of other people within reach?

The girl returned with their platters, three tacos on her plate with a side of beans and rice. New salsa was set onto the table, a cup of red, a cup of green, and a cup of pico. She spooned the green onto her first taco and lifted it up for the first bite, and it was amazing. The flavors burst across her tongue, the taco shell crunched just right. “This is taco heaven.” She decided once she swallowed the first bite. “You will need to try these.” She told him as she took another bite and hummed approvingly.

“I’ll take you up on that offer.” Julian smiled when she offered to help him babysit, now he had been glad to have accepted Gabe’s payment offer. Not that he had minded before, but it became way more interesting if Laura would join the party. “They’re Gabe’s children, I’m sure those two eat everything.” Julian snorted, having watched that man inhale almost everything in the past years that he had been at the theatre.

“Yes, it would definitely be fun.” He agreed, listening to her sum up all the things that they could do. And yet, he figured that they probably would end up doing something not as conventional as hide and seek or colour.

Those kids were a league of their own, and he was sure their cousin would join in at some point. Those three, were a bit freaky at times.

The waitress came to their table with their food and his mouth started to water as he smelled the deliciousness of it all. Laura was served first, then his plate was placed in front of him and he was glad to see that there were three tacos on his plate as well. He took his in his hand, and took a generous bite out of it. He almost moaned in delight.

Laura declared taco heaven and he agreed. Swallowing he took a sip from his glass of water and sighed contently. “Alright, lets swap tacos.” He had three, she had three, they could make it work. But first he would finish the one he had in his hand and enjoy every single bite.

“This was the most perfect idea of all times.” He told her, trying to recall when the last time it had been he had tacos. That had been a while as well. They either had pizza or that Chinese stuff Gabe swore by as take out, and other times food was made from scratch. Never tacos though. “Maybe we should fly in taco Tuesdays around the theatre.” He offered up as a suggestion, watching her, a smile curling up on his lips.
