Victor didn’t like Julian. The kid was too arrogant for his own good and that would get people hurt or worse killed. The fact that he was now hanging with Laura, didn’t sit well with him. So when he had hear the two of them going into the kitchen, he had followed and then he had smelled Laura all over the bastard. Okay not really all over but they had been in close contact to each other.

And he really didn’t like what Julian had to say about touching Laura. “Listen up, little punk…” but then stopped when he felt a hand on his upper arm. Warm fingers wrapping around his bicep and trying to draw his attention away from Julian.

Laura pointed out that he had said more to Julian than he had to her and he deflated. She tugged on his shirt sleeve and dropped the kid back to the floor. Victor faced his niece and did something very not like him. He pulled her in an embrace.

“Asshole.” He heard Julian mutter but he would let that slide for now.

“I am sorry.” He muttered into her smaller frame, another thing he wasn’t prone on doing. Apologise. But she deserved one, because she had been right. He had been avoiding her, not knowing what to say or do. He felt like he had failed her. Like he hadn’t done his best enough to find her and get her out. The horrors she had to go through without him. They had each other’s backs in there and he had just left her.

That had changed Victor, made him look at things differently. It is why he was still here in the theatre. He knew he wouldn’t make it on his own and had grown accustomed of having people around that actually cared what happened to him.

It was strange. Didn’t mean he wasn’t showering them with his broody self though.

There had been a time in her life when she would have drawn her claws the that moment Victor Creed turned to face her. Capture, confinement, and torture could change a person. She was used to it, that was how she had been raised, bent and broken as though molding all the pieces into a desirable shape would make something perfect. Watching it bestowed on another person did things to her inside that rallied the emotion they had tried to subdue out of her. And apparently watching it all done to her had changed the man that loomed, so familiar anymore, even after the time that had passed without him.

She had waited for so long, tried to keep her head above the water, tried to hold onto the idea that someone would come, or if she just waited long enough, the humans would realize the error of their ways and let everyone be. She hadn’t chosen her existence anymore than any baseline human on the planet. She had been created by them. That was the worst part.

When his arms moved around her, she stiffened for a moment, a reflex to the idea of being surrounded, but then there was warmth. It wasn’t blood being spilled that was the source of the heat, it was simply him folding her against himself.

She pressed her forehead against the dip in his collarbone and exhaled, some measure of tension leaving her that she had only vaguely been aware of. He was there. Her fingers curled into his shirt and she drew in a breath, pulling in the complete and unique scent that was him. She wanted to know who the other one was, what tie he possessed, but when she looked just beyond Victor’s shoulder and was reminded of Julian’s presence, she put the questions aside and slowly disentangled herself from the firm hold about her.

She looked from Julian to Victor, then back once more before she stepped back towards the counter and the stove. “I am very hungry.” She told them as she picked the ladle up from its rest and drew some of the thick stew out into her bowl. “Is there something between the two of you that needs settling?” She asked slowly as she turned back to face them. “Or can we please just eat?”

When she lifted her bowl to sniff at the contents. “This needs pepper.” She decided, moving on and looking first towards the stove, then reaching for another cupboard. “Where is the pepper?”

Julian watched the encounter with interest. It wasn’t that they saw Victor expressing affection much and if he did it was usually in the broody form. So, seeing him embracing Laura was something new. Something private and he looked down at the floor, his arms crossed in front of his chest, while resting his butt against the countertop.

There was even an apology and he really didn’t know if he should stay or just leave them too it. Yeah to say he was uncomfortable was not really covering it.

They were family, he could tell. Everybody could tell if they walked in right now. And he was… jealous? Maybe a little. He never had that with his family, nobody had taken real time to just come up to him and give him a hug.

So seeing Laura do so with Victor, it made him long for something he never had.

Laura broke free of the embrace and declared she was hungry. He looked up and she was already at the stove fixing herself a bowl. He looked at Victor who was eyeing him and Julian just rolled his eyes. What the fuck ever.

“Nope. I’m good.” He told her when she asked if they needed to settle something. He came into action to fill his own bowl of stew. Victor just grunted that he would talk to Laura later and stomped out of the kitchen but not before he gave Julian another death glare.

Right. Family.

He stepped around her, reaching for the cupboard next to the one she had been going for and pulled it open. “Pepper… right here.” He reached for the top shelve and handed it down to her. “Anything else?” He asked her, aware that he was standing really close to her again.

All she wanted was to be calm. All she wanted was to eat, and then attempt to relax, if she could remember how to allow herself to do so. All she wanted was for Victor to tell her everything was fine. All she wanted was a moment. It seemed so much to ask for.

The tension seemed to uncoil as she removed herself from their direct proximity. So she was the problem. She had garnered that much from the exchange, but it was odd to be the center of something that made her seem important. When she looked at Victor, and he looked at her, she felt it in the weight of his eyes as they lingered on hers. He thought she was. And that single though almost dissolved the mask that took so much more effort to lift lately.

It was a type of weakness.

In the face of cruelty, she could cloak herself, put the real her away in a box inside of her mind and stand to take whatever was given. She could sit quietly and watch mechanically as her fingers were separated from her hands. She could sit without motion or fight as cuffs were clasped around her wrists and an arm was taken clean off below the shoulder. The blood didn’t make her flinch, didn’t threaten to break her. The pain was nothing. Because they wanted her to be nothing, and she could be that way. They wanted her to feel nothing, because a weapon was a thing and it shouldn’t feel. That was why they had never given her a name, just an identifier.

When someone treated her like she mattered, the smaller presence inside of her perked up and everything broken in the depths rose to the surface desperately trying to scramble back into something whole.

Victor walked out of the room and a part of her went with him, the little part that wanted to be someone else.

Julian’s scent surrounded her and she noticed too late that he was directly beside her. Pepper, that was what she had been looking for. He tipped open a cupboard door and reached high onto an upper shelf that she would have had to stretch to reach. When he settled and handed it to her, she took note of the exceedingly close proximity the retrieval had put him to her.

Heat rose up form the center of her chest and into her neck. She swallowed as her gaze slid away from his eyes and down the side of his face. Her hand tightened around the pepper shaker and she drew it out of his. “Thank you.” School had been such a long time ago.

“How, uhm…” she grappled for her words as she drew the pepper shaker towards her chest, “how long have you been here? There must be…others, here with you? Someone here with you? Here at the theater.” She tried to correct the course. “With everyone.” Yes. “Not just with you.” She drew her lower lip in between her teeth and about bit straight through to blood. When she breathed in, it just made it worse because the scent of him flooded inward.

Then she turned and moved towards the table.

He felt a grin tug at the corner of his mouth as he watched her. Being this close, it did something to her, he could tell. She averted her gaze, grabbing the pepper from him and thanking him in the process. She looked like the schoolgirl he had left behind so long ago and it softened him a bit. This was not the time to tease or be mean.

Even he knew when to behave.

Laura started babbling and another smile curled on his lips. It was cute to see her like this and then he wanted to slap himself for it. No, Julian. Just no. Not now. Not… he wanted to say ever but… For Christ sake… He thought to himself and gave himself a mental slap.

Julian grinned at her, watching her leave for the table and followed her. Sitting down with his own bowl of stew before he answered. “I’ve been here for three-four years I think. They got me out and I decided to stay.” He leaned back in his chair and watched her. “There are others here. Some stay, some go and try their luck elsewhere.” Something he hadn’t cared to do so.

“Lately we have a bigger intake of people, not that I mind…” He leaned back forward, smile on his lips. “I like the newest addition.”

Three or four years. That was a long time, or it could be to the right person, in the right situation. Time flies when you’re having fun. She still wasn’t entirely sure what that was supposed to mean. Time was relative and moved at the same pace regardless of whether or not one was engaged in ‘fun’. She highly doubted she would notice a change in the passage of time whether she was sitting in a prison cell or playing a game of cards with Megan.

She sat down, placed her bowl gently onto the table and set to shaking the pepper over the contents within, homing back in on the sound of his voice and the way that it reverberated in his chest and slid of his tongue and between his teeth.

Got him out, she looked up to meet his eyes again as he sat down at the table across from her, leaning back in his chair and she wondered why the stew was suddenly abandoned. They had come into the kitchen to eat and now he was lounging back staring at her. When she noted her hand still shaking pepper over her own food, she turned the shaker upward, popping it out of her grip and into the air, over the edge of the table and she reacted with ease. She slipped to the side of the chair and snatched it out of the air before the glass could shatter against the tile floor.

A nervous chuckle escaped her and then she cleared her throat as she set the shaker down between them and pushed her spoon into the bowl. She swirled it and she found herself staring at her hand again. They would just slide out if she allowed them to, and then her skin would heal like it was meant to. Kimura wasn’t there to get a rise out of her to-

Laura looked back up at Julian and a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. Her thoughts clicked and she felt something familiar settle into the center of her chest. “I believe that Thor is already married.” She offered and her smile broadened, the reminiscent sensation of humor creeping into her. “Kitty is capable of phasing her hand into a person, wrapping her fingers about their heart, and then removing it.” Worse than being gutted on a pair of claws, if anyone asked her. She lifted her spoon to her lips for a bite and then coughed into her hand, pushed her spoon around again to actually stir the stew there rather than bite into another pepper blob.

Her laughter tempered out. “I am glad to be here.” She told him as she looked across the table once more and aligned her eyes with his. If she let herself sit that way long enough, she could nearly map constellations in his irises. “I am grateful to no longer be within that glass-like prison.” She nibbled briefly at the outer edge of her lower lip, then let it uncurl. “They had you?” She tilted her head, wondering how anyone had gotten close to him. “How?”

And she bounced back easily with telling him that Thor was married. He couldn’t help but grin, stir his stew and take a bite from it. She wasn’t easily baited, not like before. Not when they were in school and all she needed was one word from him to either explode or skulk off. “Yeah, no, Thor isn’t my type.” He smiled, after hearing what Kitty would do to anyone coming near her husband.

He had seen first-hand what that woman could do on a mission and that would put the ever-living fear in anyone.

Sampling the stew, Laura had been right. It needed pepper. He took the shaker and added some pepper to his own bowl. Stirring it and tasting it. Much better indeed. He watched her eat her own stew and something stirred inside him.

What was it with her that all of a sudden, he just wasn’t quite himself? He hadn’t even run off to find another pair of gloves. He flexed his fingers, thinking about his gloves and sighed silently. Yeah, he was really off centre when around Laura Kinney. Had that always been the case? Even back in school?

Julian locked eyes with her, hearing her say that she was glad to be here. So was he. Even if they hadn’t set out to free her, he was grateful they had found her and put an end to whatever horrors they were putting her through. He could relate. He had been freed in a random mission as well, him and a bunch of other mutants. Laura’s questions pulled him out of staring into the depths of her eyes and he blinked. Right. Stop doing that.

“I … I got lifted from my bed.” He told her, he had been on the run. His parents had publicly disavowed him to save their precious name, so he had no place to go. He had been running around on the streets, hiding from sentinels the best he could and helping out others like him.

“I was hiding in this condemned apartment complex with a few others when they came.” He stared into his bowl of stew, trying to recall that day. “I helped this mother with her kid when I got hit with one of those inhibitor darts. They pinned me down easily after that and next thing I know I woke up in one of those damn cells.” His appetite gone, he looked back up at Laura.

“I found out later that the mother and her kid never made it out.” They had been killed by the collapsing building and his attempt had been for nothing. They were dead and he had been locked up, being experimented on. They had been looking for a mutant with his abilities and somehow had tagged him on the streets. He had led them to that building and it had cost lives. Somehow, he believed that his parents were behind it, that they had given SentS the information needed to take him, an easy way to get rid of a son they never wanted. A son with mutant powers.

His hands curled into fists on the table, next to his bowl of stew. How he hated his parents for doing that to their kid, mild satisfaction though when he had taken his trust fund from them after he had gotten out. Little help from Jax and they were now funding the resistance and there was nothing they could do about it. That helped. A little.

To hear him hesitate, was not what she could remember of him. His words hung suspended and she waited for him to continue, to explain. It baffled her still that any other of their kind with true active mutations could be taken. She could fight her way out of near anything, but she had to get close enough. And close enough allowed for inhibitors and suppressants, it didn’t matter that her body metabolized it quicker, it still had to run a course.

Taken without warning, an ambush of sorts. That’s how they won. And how many of them were abducted trying to help other people?

She looked down at his hands on the table. They had removed them, and once more, she wondered if it was because the humans thought his abilities stemmed form them. She could see why they might consider such, he had often been tactile with his telekinesis, using his hand to direct motion and use similarly to how people commented that Italians couldn’t speak without their hands. But it came from within, for all of them, it was written in their blood, and nature adapted.

“I am sorry that that happened to you.” She told him as she looked at the contents of her bowl. “They never come for us head on. Always without warning because it is the only way that they can win.”

She thought about Beth, every moment she had ever tried to encourage her of comfort her, from the very first moment they had met, to their most recent interaction, and she reached her hand across the table. Contact, touch, as much as she had been programmed to avoid it, every time Beth reached out to her, something dislocated seemed to slip back into an alignment she wasn’t aware that it should have been in. She pushed her fingertips along his thumb and forefinger, then towards his wrist where she curled her hand gently around him.

“It was not your fault. You know that, right?” She looked up to meet his eyes, searching for their deep and yielding blue. “Those people.” She swallowed as she tried to imagine them. “You had nothing to do with their deaths.”

Because it wasn’t their fault that they were what they were. And it wasn’t their fault that they were hunted for simply breathing.

He unclenched his hands, laying them flat on the table and let out a shuddering breath. She was sorry it happened to him, which made him smile a little. She, who had endured much more than him. It humbled him. “They are assholes.” He said, agreeing with her. Julian watched her move her hand towards his, felt her fingertips slide over his bionic hand and she made it feel real.

He had felt like they hadn’t been a part of him for so long but with a simple touch from her, she changed that.

Her hand came to a rest around his wrist and he let out the breath he had been holding. His other hand moved, curling around hers on top. He was liking this more than he should, but he couldn’t stop himself.

Laura told him that it hadn’t been his fault. That it hadn’t been his fault that they had died. How he wanted to belief her in that moment. But it had been his fault. They had been after him. “It doesn’t feel like that.” He told her.

“They were after me. I got them killed.” And it was in a way his fault. That apartment complex had given him a false sense of security, he had lowered his guards and it had cost him his freedom and the deaths of that mother and child. “I should have been more careful, and in the end, it cost me my hands.” He gave her a gentle squeeze with the one on top of hers and gave her a sad smile.

“But we’re free now.” He said. “That’s all that matters, right?”

Jurassic World. She wasn’t sure she understood why there would be a new movie, or better yet, a new series of movies considering how the first had ended. Why would anyone be naïve enough to start up another park with dinosaurs and assume that it would be fine? They had thought that in the first movie and half the cast had ended up eaten. And then they had apparently tried to make two more movies after that, and before this new one. Needless to say, she was very curious about what these movie writers did in their free time that warranted cycling back through source material and deciding on a rehash.

She would not be stupid enough to even consider recreating dinosaurs, let alone do it twice. Doing such was just poor life choices.

Apparently Jurassic Anything was Gabriel’s choice. He claimed to enjoy the humor of it all. So she could blame him if the movie was awful. He was sitting right down in front, directly in the middle, a bowl of popcorn against his chest and a caffeine infused beverage in the seat cup holder.

She had mentioned it to Victor, but he had ‘other things’ to do. She wasn’t sure why he sought to be deflective and round about with her. She was not a child meant to be coddled, and yet he strove to shield her from everything and anything. As if she couldn’t smell Madelyne all over him. It would be a lot easier to lie to her if they didn’t share similar mutations.

Then she had made mention to Julian she had planned to sit for a showing, and attempted to offer it in casual passing conversation. She still was unsure how to present it to him in any other way. If it were his idea, he’d likely just tell her so. She wasn’t sure why he still had this effect on her, even after years of not even being around him. Had she thought about him? Sure. But she had thought about a lot of people. It was how she let her mind drift whenever she wanted to lose focus on the present. Whenever they sought to compare her and Thor’s abilities, it was how she kept from screaming; send her. Mind elsewhere, somewhere and some when else.

The screen brightened and the lights dimmed. If it was a flop of a movie, she was going to beat Gabriel.
