Caitlin let her fingers go through his hair, just taking comfort from that until Gabe gave her a kiss on her wrist and sat back on his heels. She could see the wheels spinning in his head, he had just come up with another name for their daughter. “Frank?” She started laughing, where was he finding these names? Okay so maybe Francesca was a cute name but not for their daughter.

Nope, Gabriella was already taking root and Cait was not going to budge on it. Not even when he picked her up in his arms. She just smiled, he could say the most hilarious things. “I disagree on that. Gabby is a cute name.” he moved them out of the bedroom, her arms going around his neck. Then he offered another name, and she shook her head in amusement.

“You know we agreed to not go with season names.” The horror the kid would go through because of that. Nope, she would not do that to her own kid.

Cait noticed Chris, his eyes narrowed at them and she just grinned. Yeah, she could have walked. Could have pointed out that it had been her abilities that weren’t working and her legs were fine but she liked it when he carried her like this. And she knew that it was his way to make sure she wasn’t going anywhere where he couldn’t keep her safe. They entered the kitchen and Gabe sat her down in a chair at the table.

She watched him go to the fridge and get the boxes of leftover Amazing 66. Her stomach started to growl just at the thought of food. “Gabby is fine with anything right now.” She told him with a smile on her face.

“While you feed me…” She started. “…what did I miss after we arrived back here? How’s Elise?” Because she hadn’t forgotten that the girl had been shot, but at that moment she had other priorities. Make sure her children were okay. And then have a panic attack. Because that seemed the thing to do around here. She wanted to ask about Jax but for now Elise was the safe subject.

The microwave hummed and he drummed his fingers atop it, sighing when she once more referred to their daughter as ‘Gabby’. She was stuck on that name. If he wanted her to change it, he was going to have to somehow convince her how awful it was rather than grasping at other names to simply counter with. It just seemed a little egotistical to name a child after oneself, and his ego wasn’t that big.

She asked about Elise and he looked back at the microwave as it beeped its happy little done chime. He took two forks from the cutlery drawer and moved back towards the table, setting her plate before her and taking the seat just to her left.

“She’s still alive.” He commented as he stacked the prongs up with plenty of meat and veggies. “Thanks to Kira, she won’t have a scar to speak of it, almost as if it never happened.” That could be a good or bad thing, depending on the individual and whether or not they liked proof. Elise did not strike him as the type that wanted a large gob of scar tissue emblazoned on her collarbone. “As fatal as it might have appeared, I don’t think anything is ever going to kill that girl.”

Then he stuffed his bite into his mouth and chewed, almost hummed his approval before he realized they had nothing to drink. Returning to the fridge he reached for two water bottles, considered a beer, then thought better of himself when he considered Cait. Perhaps later, once she was passed out in bed. After he checked on the recuperating human and the cyborg next to her.

He set the bottles down. “Fate seems to like her, or something.” Would have been nice if Ericka would have shot her with a tranq gun rather than a fucking rifle, though.

“Beth took her downstairs, all nice and cozy next to the accused.”

Corrupted. That was one of the few words he had heard Wanda utter before he had bolted from the building. Then Vision and Forge seemed to insist Jaxon had been compromised by malware, the downside to his bionics. It had rounded and rounded in his head wondering where and when he had acquired it.

Her mouth watered as he placed the plate in front of her, handing a fork over she took it gladly from him and starting to attack that plate like she was starving. Oh wait, she was. Gabe told her that Elise was still alive and that Kira had made sure that there wouldn’t be any scars left to show for it. Caitlin snorted over her husband’s assessment of that human girl.

Cait sighed in happiness when she started chewing, the food tasted so good. As if the baby was making her appreciate Amazing 66 even more. She wouldn’t be surprised, after all she had craved for Mongolian Beef.

“And now we have two to look after.” She told him amused, not that it mattered to her who joined their little ragtag of mutants. They could use all the help, and both Elise and Kate had their specialties. But she knew that Gabe was taking it upon him to keep both of them safe. “You do know that they are both grown women, don’t you?” She had taken another bite but grabbed for the bottle of water after he had sat it on the table.

Gabe pointed out that fate liked Elise or something and she started grinning. Yeah that girl had some luck in the bullet department, if you could call it that.

“The accused…?” Her mind needed a moment to catch up with whom he meant. “Oh, right. Him.” She shovelled another bite into her mouth and thought about her next question very carefully. “How is he doing?” There, nice and safe. “I assume Jon and Vision are doing their thing?” Since Elise was out of it, and she was the only other person in this building who could help Jax. “Did they figure out what… corrupted him?” Wasn’t that what Megan had told her after she had brought her to her room? After she told the girl she didn’t want to hear anything until she had checked on her children.

Megan had closed her mouth, remaining silent after that. Cait should apologise to her, but later. She wasn’t sure Gabe would let her out of his sight, not that she wanted to be out of his sight. Not while she was a dud. Besides, just talking like this was just what she needed. To keep her grounded and not freaking out.

Cait was after all slowly working through her questions, there was still one left but she figured to leave that one for last. She took another bite and sighed happily. She liked it when he got her food.

Of course. She would ask about Jaxon only after he made reference to him. Because she could feel him better than most. He gave a nod when she made reference to Forge and Vision. The pair seemed to work and communicate like a slightly dysfunctional set of twins, oddly read each other’s intentions, finish sentences as though the discussion was had been rehearsed. Elise’s half cobbled thoughts only seemed to push them further.

“I don’t completely understand it.” He told her, pushing his for around the box in front of him. “Initially it sounded like a virus had hijacked his head, now it sounds like something that called to programming already set up.” Even though Jaxon had spent the last years disabling and removing what he had apparently deemed threatening from any coding build into his make-up. That, he supposed, could leave holes. Open channels, like receptors in the brain.

“He’s detained for the time being.” Then he pushed another bite into his mouth. As ‘safe’ as he felt Caitlin was back with them, with him, she was still nearly powerless, which meant somewhat defenseless. Her best ability was her empathy, it blanketed the area and alerted her to any and every person in the vicinity and their potential intents. It gave her the ability to perceive the world as few could, and without it, he imagined it somewhat like blindness. He didn’t like it.

He didn’t like the image of Jaxon literally strapped down.

But he disliked the image of tearing the world apart to get to his wife again even more.

Until they were sure Jaxon posed little to no further threat, he would remain tethered or restrained in some manner. A cell if that was more comfortable once his bionics could be stabilized enough o keep him alive without the added external accessories.

“I’m not a fan.” He told her once he had swallowed, because he wasn’t. Jaxon, some part of him, was still the man he had been the day prior. “But it’s necessary for the time being.”

Gabe told her that initially it sounded like a virus but that it was more looking like a failed update or something. Which sounded right, or well she thought it did. She was good around a computer but she left everything up to Jaxon and Jon. She didn’t bother them with the technicality of things, she just trusted them. She stopped eating for a moment. Thinking back to the moment Jax had turned, his humanity just gone.

She shuddered, pulling herself back to the now, hearing her husband tell her that Jax was being detained for the time being. Which was probably a smart thing to do right now. Who knew what kind of faulty programming had crept in.

Cait didn’t like that this was happening to her friend. Especially one who had been doing everything in his power to cut ties to SentS, to become his own person. She still remembered the first time he had held Lexie after she was born. He had looked so lost holding a tiny wriggling human being, but her daughter had calmed down instantly when she had looked at Jax. His face in wonder. It had made her smile.

“I know it’s necessary. I don’t like it either.” She told him, continuing her food. Plate was two thirds empty by now. “I just want him to get better.” She let out a sigh, stabbing her food in frustration.

“I feel ridiculous helpless right now.” She muttered, shovelling another fork full into her mouth. “I can’t even summon a little flame.” Dropping her fork to the table and snapping her fingers, focussing so hard to just see a little spark… but nothing. She grumbled, grabbed her fork again and stabbed at her food. At least she wasn’t as cold anymore, like before.

Ben could sleep through a freight train, she was sure, but the slightest slip of any sort of energy it seemed, and the boy was up. She stood in his doorway, just watching him, his little chest rising and falling, his little rubbing together, a half-whined comment about chasing a dragonfly. It was familiar, yet she was starting to realize how fleeting it was becoming. His immersion in with his cousins was driving him to become something and someone other than the quiet boy he had been, and it was all positive. Whereas he used to fear making car and train noises to loudly for fear of hunters picking up on the slight sounds, now he drove them happily about without concern. It was…better.

Six shifted slightly in the corner and she glanced at it. The circular light in its chest glowed faint blue when it turned to acknowledge her. She offered a smile in the dim light and it gave a subtle of its head.

She drew the door back near shut and turned back to the main room, picked her sweatpants up off the floor and drew them on. Then she left the room behind, intent on the kitchen to wait out the returned promise of pizza.

The later hour and the recent commotion left the halls empty and making her way to the kitchen was simple enough and went unhindered.

She touched her thumb to the little band around her third finger and bit her lower lip as she rounded into the kitchen. Finding Gabriel and Caitlin, the familiar scent of Chi -Mongolian Beef. She moved directly towards them, not hiding her steps as she moved to Caitlin and set pressed a kiss to the side of her neck. “How’s Steve?” She asked, a smirk offered when Gabe turned to look at her, a wide smile on his face.

Then she moved towards the fridge, intent on a bottle of water that she retrieved, noting six further bottles waiting, then sat down across from Caitlin. She popped the top and took a long drink.

“In the mood for pizza as well?”

Alex let the uber pull over and paid the driver. He picked up the five pizza boxes carefully stacked next to him on the seat and proceeded to unfold his large body out of the small car under the curious glances of the guy in the front seat. “You sure I can’t take you further?” he asked, and Alex just murmured a quick no, thanks, man as he walked ahead into one of the darker alleys that would eventually lead onto the maze of paths that would take him into the theatre.

After everything, Alex had deemed it a good idea to not just fly in. Not only was there that chance that it would alert Ben but possibly whoever else had their eyes fixed on the skies above New York after the incident earlier. New mutant menace, the news were already breaking. But Ben really carried more weight here. While someone could ignite an earthquake and Paige would probably have to pull the boy from his bed, energy conversion roused the little fellow in an instant.

It took him another ten minutes to make his way back before he finally stepped back into the foyer. Clad in jeans and a thick, dark blue jacket, he did not bother shedding the outer layers of clothing before stepping into the kitchen.

“Honey, I’m home”, he piped up as he rounded the corner.

Paige was there, much like the both of them had agreed on just under an hour ago. Alex had taken off to get Pizza, one for each of them, an extra – and he had made it three extras because having leftover things to eat whenever in the fridge was fast becoming a thing here. Peperoni, mushrooms and ham, Hawaii for the really adventurous, and twice just cheese.

Now he looked at three people rather than just one. “Oh”, he added, then went on with a “hi” as he set down the cartons filled with hot Italian goodness. Alex slipped out of his jacket and pulled his beanie off of his head. He wore a pale blue and grey shirt underneath. Slipping the jacked over the back rest of the last empty chair at the table, Alex stepped around towards Caitlin. He leaned down and pulled his sister-in-law into a hug. “I’m glad you’re ok”, Alex murmured as he pressed her against him for a moment before sitting back down alongside Paige.

She had already picked out the carton for her pizza, and Alex picked a cheese one for himself and then pushed the remaining three further onto the table. “Enough to go around …”, he announced just as he got up and headed to the fridge to pick up a bottle of water for himself as well. While he was at it, he also picked up three bottles of beer. Returning to the table, he just pushed one of them towards Gabriel, set another one down for Paige and then proceeded to open both bottles from himself. He graced Caitlin with a quick glance. That she was not drinking alcohol went without saying.

He gulped down the water bottle in one go, then put the empty bottle onto the table and took hold of the beer. “I drink to … tonight being a little too close for comfort”, he said, lifted the bottle and then tipped it to his lips to let a mouthful of beer slip past his lips.

Cait finished off her plate and wanted to ask Gabe to get her some more when Paige walked into the kitchen. She smiled at the other woman who moved towards them. She got a kiss and then the woman had to ask about Steve. “Gabby is fine.” She glared at Paige, the traitor. Nobody was to side with her husband on this. She was sure she could get Alex on her side… although he might not want to go against his brother and get in the middle. Damn it.

Well fine, she would win this anyway. On her own.

“Wait, did you say pizza?” Cait looked at Paige with narrowed eyes. “Is Alex getting them?” And then something popped up on her radar. Just like that, not bright like usual though. Then she focussed, there was Gabe, their connection flaring back to life instantly and she let out a deep sigh. Like someone had opened up the faucet after only letting it drip. There were her kids, and then Alex, Paige, Ben…

She started smiling, as slowly everybody started to pop back up on her radar. No feelings, emotions just dots.

“Alex is in bound.” She told them with a grin. God, it felt good to at least have that back. And not a moment later after she told them that he was coming, he rounded the corner telling Paige that he was home. That made her chuckle, and he had a stack of pies. The scent wafted towards her and she had to consciously remind herself to not groan. Where did this hunger come from all of a sudden?

“Hey.” She replied, watching him take his jacket off, put it on the chair and then stepping around the table to give her a hug. “I’m glad I’m okay too.” She said with a smile, staring at the boxes on the table. Paige had grabbed hers, Alex his and then Cait just stood and grabbed the first one on top.

“For Christ sake, mushrooms.” She muttered and shoved the box at her husband. Opened another one and was met with just a plain cheese. That’ll do. She grabbed a slice, sat back while Alex toasted to tonight being a little too close for comfort. “I eat to that.” She said with a smile and took a bite from the slice.

“How’s Ben?” She asked, wondering what this had done to her nephew. Since he was deeply connected to her twins.

The idea of continuing to restrain Jaxon rubbed him the wrong way. It was one thing to be angry, for him to lash out, to push another person away. But this was something wholly other. Restraint. He tried to imagine himself in the same situation, cut off from his abilities, half his capability of living, and having Cait out of reach. Jaxon taking Caitlin had about thrust such sensations onto him.

He watched her stab at and shift her food around her plate, frustration getting the better to her, and it only half tied to Jaxon’s current status in the lab. Then she referenced her still lacking abilities, and he sighed, but kept his tongue behind his teeth. She didn’t even need access to her empathy to infect him with her emotions, it was in the way she moved, her actions, her cues, the sound of her voice. She wanted to be warm and he rub his toed along her calf. “I’m sure I could assist you with some flame.” He bounced his eyebrows at her.

Footsteps moving towards the kitchen has his senses swinging towards the doorway, noting Paige stepping within. A brief flash of surprise on her face. She moved to Caitlin, pressed a kiss to her shoulder, neck or chin, he wasn’t sure, then asked about Steve. He beamed at the question, practically ready to throw his hands up to high-five her over his wife’s head, when Caitlin informed her-them-that Gabby was apparently just fine.

Gabby.

It was so…ugh.

Paige moved across the table, water bottle in hand, before she sat, inquiring about whether or not they felt in the mood for pizza. The hell, did she have pizza stuffed down her top? Cait leaned forward, seeking clarification and he followed suit. “Really?” Pizza, at that hour? There were four-

Then Cait perked up, noting Alex was inbound, and within a moment, his brother stepped into the room, a greeting on his lips and pizza in his hands. He moved to comment on the pizza and Alex’s convenient timing when he snapped back to his wife instead. A smile had taken her features and he stared at her for the briefest of moment before a grin tugged at his lips. So she wasn’t completely powerless, then. His gaze dropped to her abdomen and wondered about the mini-Cait that was brewing and her apparent ability that seemed to feed her mother’s.

Alex removed his jacket, wrapped his arms briefly around Cait, then moved onto the fridge. Glass bottles clinking together and he bit his tongue when he sat down with three. Paige immediately reached for a box, flipping the lid and finding satisfaction with whatever toppings stared back at her. Alex picked up another, and then Cait turned the lid of another, scoffing out her frustration over mushrooms and he immediately held his hands out to receive the box. Sausage and mushroom; there was something wrong with her to snub it. Mushrooms were amazing. Fresh ones, not canned crap.

Alex offered a toast, beer bottle in hand, Cait lifted a slice of pizza, as did Paige and he shrugged his shoulders. He was in agreement.

Paige swallowed and straightened slightly. “Well, once Gabe vacated the premises, Ben managed to settle.”

He frowned at her. “What the hell is that-”

“You literally blew up and sent my son into a fit.”

He took a bite of his pizza and frowned further. “I wasn’t the one yelling.” He pointed out.

“He responded to massive expulsion of energy.”

He chewed, his mind racing further ahead. “No shit?” He looked to Alex. “He picks up on that from across a building?”

Alex found himself winding down. The pizza was still hot enough, and it was delicious. The beer went down well with it and somehow it seemed just the moment for it. So much had happened tonight, good and bad. So he sat back, listened to the exchange between Paige and his brother, munching silently on a slice of pizza. He had a small smile on his lips when Gabriel eventually turned to look at him. Alex just nodded.

“I’d say to him it was like uncle Gabe was shouting right into his ears”, he offered. “He picks up the smallest emissions.” Pride rang in his voice. Ben, at the age of three, had mustered a level of self-control Alex was miles away from as an adult. He wondered what would happen once Ben went through full manifestation of his power. Many children took until puberty and longer to full develop their abilities.

Then he looked to Paige. “I’ve never seen him like this”, he said and his mind slipped back to the scene. “Lexi picked up on … you”, he went on, looking at Cait now. “Or you not being there for her.” He remembered when the girl had practically bounded into his arms. “And then, next thing that happened, Ben came in after her”, he went on.

“After Rogue dosed me, I think it was partially Ben to get me back on my feet … and he didn’t even do it intentionally.” Alex threw Paige a glance as if to confirm his version of the story with her. She was in the process of chewing, holding the slice in her left hand. Alex’s gaze dropped to the ring on her finger, and a smile slipped across his lips.

Then he turned back to Caitlin. “What about you? Any side effects?” He tipped his head sideways, his gaze momentarily turning inward. Then another smile light up his face. “You’re there.” It was just a blip on the fringe of his awareness. He was no talent in terms of telepathy or empathy, but he could sense the connection Caitlin appeared to have reinforced ever since she had found out about the attacks he kept having.

“And what’s going to happen to Jaxon now?” Alex did not know the man very well, but he had picked up on his brother and his family regarding the half-android as a friend, someone close. It was part of the reason why Alex had put himself between the man and his brother earlier. Anyone that close deserved a second chance. Alex was a prime exactly for it.

“Where did you put him?”
