Alex did give the pairing of his name with her last one a thought, but came back to giving her his. He was old-fashioned that way. And he just wanted Paige to be a Summers. Join his family. She had always had a big one. Now, somehow, somewhere in his most private of private minds, he deemed it his time to have one. Somehow the idea sparked giddiness. But more so than the extended concept of family, eventually his inner eye focussed on the much smaller trio of people: Alex, Paige and Ben Summers. His own little family.

He had no words to describe his feelings.

Paige’s hands began roaming, and a small smile spread on his lips as he gave himself over to the woman who was now supposed to be his keeper, for the rest of their lives.

Warmth spread throughout him, chasing away the dread and weariness that had seeped into his bones. The day had been a reminder, returning to his mind how quickly it could all be gone. It had come to show him how the threat might even already rest right their in their very middle, amongst the lines of their very own. It put things into perspective, let worry fade and the focus on what really mattered grow stronger. Alex felt like he had never seen clearer than today.

The sensation of warmth pooled in his stomach region, slowly growing more intense and into something else. A moan of appreciation slipped past his lips. He looked up, knowing he would never tire of the sigh of her naked body - be it on top of him, underneath him or pretty much anywhere near him. The idea to spend the rest of his life in the knowing arms and hands of one Paige Guthrie seemed to amplify the effects of her every touch, every brush of her fingertips against his skin.

Paige tipped her head forward, resting her forehead against his hip bone. Alex wanted to reach down, see what it was that had her pause but before he could do that, she shifted, suddenly between his legs. Alex held his breath, and it was like the heat he felt twisted into a coil of anticipation that exploded outward right into his fingertips and toes when he lips wrapped around him. His vocal reaction was deep, and he let his head fall back.

Her lips firm around him and her mouth matching the warmth he felt on the inside, Alex moaned deep in his throat at each pass. Just a small, barely audible sound. Her motions were slower than they would usually be - maddeningly so, and Alex knew that he probably would not last very long if she was to keep it up.

He gripped the bed sheets, feeling ripples race across the entire length of his body. What she did was add a growing need to a slowly climbing level of arousal. It would eventually send him skyrocketing. At a certain point his body would just throw the towel and he would climax. He whispered her name, once … then eventually again. Added a small Please and Imgonna.. but no complete sentences. His brain could not manage them right there and then.

A small jolt went down his left arm - its twin not mirroring the reflex as the bionic limb was not built for such - and the moan escaping him this time was louder.

It was apparently enough to make Paige halt. Alex could hear his heartbeat in his ears, it was racing. And his breathing was deeper, faster than normal. He was in sight of that ledge, and what with Paige pausing, he could stop himself from going over just yet. “Wha..”, he looked up, not quite sure anymore where or when he was. All he saw was her… that blonde vision of a woman who wore the ring he had given her.

Then her lips were back and it was like having a surge of lightning driven through him. It electrified him, set every nerve ending on fire. He breathed her name, the sound almost helpless as he gave himself over to her completely.

This time, it did not take him that long to reach that stage just before the peak once more. Again, she pulled back and this time, the grunt in his chest was almost incredulous. “Mercy…”, he pushed out, a shiver racing across his chest when Paige’s tongue drew a line toward his navel. He watched her crawl upward and in reflex his arms came up to settle on her hips.

Her words widened the smile on his face. His chest rose and fell, his entire upper body shifting with the motion. He breathed through parted lips, wild and almost glowing eyes roaming her face in the semi darkness. The hunger that would not allow for further messing around from his side of things was ignited and he looked at her in awe.

“Paige Summers”, he repeated her name just as his hold on her hips tightened just enough to shift his hips beneath her. Then he tipped his hips forward slightly before pushing upwards and with slow, languid strokes he found his way into her until he was fully seated. Alex sat up, his feet on the floor as he sat on the corner of their bed, Paige’s naked form on his lap. Strong hands pushed her legs around him.

He rolled his hips. One hand was in the small of her back and slipping down to support her where she sat and allow her to meet him without slipping off of him. The other vanished between them, his palm resting below her navel as his thumb found the little knob that did such incredible things to her body when handled right. A gentle circular motion that matched the roll of his hips.

Alex was reminded on that night on the rooftop after the Services had momentarily gotten their hands on her. Ever since then, it felt like the two of them had stolen themselves away into this room or any kind of closet that could be bolted shut from the inside more and more. And he just liked the position where she was seated in his lap like this.

The pace he picked up was a match to those of her lips from before. Slow, deep, sensual. Alex gasped whenever he stifled what would have otherwise been a potentially vocal vent of the arousal that built and build in his mid-section. He actively fought his own arousal back, tried to steer clear of the ledge as much as he could while he waited for Paige’s climax to build. Her lower lip continued to disappear beneath that row of upper teeth more often, her fingers dug deeper into his skin and eventually small tremors were building in her body.

It was when he let go, his rhythm increasing and his eyes falling shut for a moment. His right hand sought her left one, fingers interlocking while his left one still held her in place.

“Now …”, he choked out as the heat pushed into every cell of his body and flung him over that ledge where he knew she’d follow.

It wasn’t tied to the emotional rollercoaster they had been wrangled through in the last few hours. Alex simply had to walk into a room and her mind would imagine at least three different ways to have sex with him in that very room within the few moments of his arrival. There was no hiding it, and she had no compulsion to do so. The attraction to him had been existent likely since the moment she had met him. Perhaps not in the capacity that it had exponentially grown to.

There was a modicum of guilt each time she drew back, a sliver of guilt for the quiet desperation in his voice. There was a measure of pleasure that she found just in watching him, watching his body climb, watching his face flip between expressions. So pushing him forward, and then drawing back to allow him slide, only to offer the ability to watch it all start again was almost like feeding an addiction.

Her thighs flexed when he sat up and she slipped her arms around his shoulders, she smiled at the look in his eyes, pupils dilated wide and it had nothing to do with the lighting. Her intended name drawn across his lips, tugged to loosen the knots in her chest. She wasn’t sure if it was her name paired with his, or if it was just the way that he said it.

His fingers dug into her hips, shifted her about, and she willingly let him maneuver her in any way he desired until he could push himself into her. She sighed, content with the sensation of the stretch. His hands abandoned the placement long enough to slide around her thighs and calves, tucking them about him, then a palm settled against her lower back. His hips rolled and she scraped her nails gently along the back of his neck, drawing her right hand back to set above his left knee seeking balance. Her hips tipped forward the moment his thumb pressed against the tight knob of nerves at the apex of her thighs.

She moaned his name, her head tilting back. His thrusts and strokes were almost achingly slow, his apparent payback.

The moment he gasped, her gaze swam back around to lock onto him. There was a flush to his neck and shoulders, his brow furrowed, his eyes on her. It took her about three seconds to realize he was fighting himself to wait. The matching rhythm she had sought to time with him almost stuttered. She pushed her hands back around the sides of his neck, rubbed slow circles beneath his ears, and drew her self closer, tilted her hips tighter towards his.

“Faster, Alex.” She encouraged as she nipped at his chin and lips.

And then he did so. Let his eyes lose focus, let them slide shut. His thumb drew away, immediately seeking her left hand to braid his fingers with.

The swell of emotion in response had her leaning forward to set her forehead momentarily against his shoulder, the position allowed for just enough further friction to push her. Coupled with the moan in her ear, and her entire body tightened as she came. His erratic motions as he followed…

She laxed her grip around his shoulder enough to graze his skin lightly with her fingertips.

“I love you.” She brushed the tip of her nose from the notch at the back of his jaw up towards his ear lobe. An aftershock rippled through her and she smiled against his neck, and she squeezed the hand that he had taken. “Pretty spot on with the sizing.” She told him as she drew their linked hands upward to look over the ring he had pushed onto her finger with ease. She smiled again, brighter the longer she looked at it. “Are you sure you want to marry me?” She asked around a chuckle.

Blind, and open. Fully depending on her. His heart bare for her, his soul drinking in her presence and this moment they shared. Alex could feel it. Like a wind tunnel momentarily sucking the both of them in. It wrapped around them, locked them in, made him feel her somehow. So close. She was like the moth to his flame and Alex silently prayed that she would never again be burned by him.

In a way, it was so much the same intense act that the both of them were capable of. Of course, other instances were peppered with giggles. Or sometimes it was a sudden mutual hunger than just needed to be sated. But then there were the instances like this was, when something swallowed the both of them up and an underlying emotion dictated their interaction turning it into something deeper, richer and meaningful. It gave him goosebumps, paired with an intense feeling of gratefulness.

Alex felt her forehead against his shoulder and his left hand travelled up to the nape of her neck. Her words made him shiver in response and he had to resist the urge to ask her to just say them again. And as it usually would in such moments, once more the thought swept forward how small the chance of this once more being part of his life had been. And now here he was, with her, and she was going to marry him.

A smile split his lips. “And I love you”, he whispered back, simply not tiring of saying these words either. He pulled her left hand between them, fast in his old as he pulled her a little closer with the other hand as the aftershock let her form tremble ever so slightly. Then he let her pull their joined hands out and up a bit to get a good look at the ring. His own smile mirrored hers. She commented on the sizing and Alex just chose to keep to himself that he had had help. “Lucky guess”, was all he said.

Then came a question that made his brows furrow slightly even as she chuckled. Was he sure? He drew his eyebrows down a little, looking at her eyes for a moment before brushing his lips against hers in a tender little peck of a kiss. “Why do you keep asking?” he murmured, his eyes on hers and shifting back and forth as he wondered what the response would be.

Was she uncertain that he meant it? Alex couldn’t help think back to the small but snide enough little comments his brother had dropped here and there. Was that kind of babble from the youngest brother taking root? Alex did not want to think of what he would do were Paige to begin doubting just because Gabriel kept running his damned mouth. There would certainly be a confrontation, and this time Alex doubted it would be him to end up indisposed.

But for now, he decided to not panic just not yet. With Paige things often had a reason that even he could understand. He just needed to ask at times. “I’m not going to back out”, he added, his gaze serious. If possible, he would just whisk her up now and exchange vows right here and now. He was done running – especially from Paige. For good, if anything he would be running towards her. Still, on the other hand, he wanted to see her in one of those dresses. As a bride… his bride. Alex smiled in spite of himself. Who would have thought there was more than just one old-fashioned bone in his body?

He bit his lower lip as his eyes roamed her face and he tried imagine what she would look like. Alex knew Paige would have no problem at all getting married in a jeans and a t-shirt. In that regard, she could be so very no-nonsense and he loved that about her. She was the girl he could do all kinds of silly stuff with. She could out-eat him at any pizza feast hands down and she had a right hook like the devil. And yet she had the sweetest and cutest smile he had ever seen on a girl.

But maybe it was time for a bit of fairy tale. After everything, the both of them deserved a little bit of swoon, and fairy dust and music and dancing with everyone they knew and loved.

“What kind of wedding would you like?”

Why did she keep asking, why did she keep offering one of her few remaining insecurities forward? Because she wanted it smoothed over, because she wanted to be sure, because she wanted to know what it truly felt like to be the one that was chosen for once. Even as he assured her over and over that he wanted her. It was still so strange to think that someone would want to have her when there was nothing special about her beyond the mutated genes in her blood. He could have anyone, but he kept saying that he wanted her. Even when he had once left her behind.

His lips sweeping across hers drew her outward once more.

Not going to back out. She pushed the thought away and the memories it could conjure if she allowed it to. That was then, this was now, the world was different. He had been a different person, she had been someone else.

She watched him look her over, his eyes skating across her features trying to wring her thoughts from her mind. He looked at her like no one ever had. It burrowed a thick and unyielding heat behind her sternum, it thrummed and hummed and it came to life for him. It had grown, something so small, into something near out of her ability to control of fight back. And she had let it out. She had let it take hold.

He had left her behind once.

The thought still prodded at something else hidden deep.

And then it was challenged by the fact that he had returned, risked himself to take her out of Service’s hands. Her doubt quivered and buckled, fed only by the insecurity that anyone thought her of any value.

And I love you.

I love you. I love you. I love you.

He asked her what kind of wedding she wanted. “Just you.” She told him simply, swallowing back any shred of inhibition that sought to sit on her tongue. “And Ben.” She didn’t need anyone else. She loved Gabe, and she loved Cait, and the twins, and Sam, and so many people housed in that building. But she could live without them if she had Alex and Ben. “In the morning.”

She smiled. “I don’t care if I’m in my pajamas in the overgrown back garden.” She shifted on his lap, let herself relax further, leaning into him. “I don’t need beautiful flowers or an aisle to walk. Just you.” Her thumbs pressed against his chin. “You do this,” she drew her lower lip between her teeth, sucking gently at the kiss swollen skin, “and you’re mine.”

Just as he had asked the question, Alex’s mind had begun spinning the different possibilities into ideas. The image that stayed with him was the one of her in one of those dresses, hair all done, looking like a bride. But the second it came to him he knew it was not her. Not really anyway. Maybe if he put in a bit of effort and tried to convince her to have a big wedding she would humour him. But where was the point? Why put on a show if all she wanted was simple?

The smile on his lips widened. Just the three of them, in the morning sun when the day was young. He could imagine her. Bright eyes, her blonde hair golden. The idea to get married in pyjamas made him chuckle. He felt her relax, loved the warmth of her skin against his. She counted out all the things she didn’t need, then sucked in the lower lip in that way that made him think along the lines of more time spent as they just had.

“I am yours.” He simply said, there was no doubt in his mind. No other place he wanted to be. Alex fully embraced the idea, and it kept surprising him how simple it suddenly was to consider marriage. There was nothing daunting about it.

He pressed a kiss to her temple and then his stomach growled. “How about pizza?” he suggested. “I’ll go grab some for us and meet you in the kitchen, Mrs. Summers?”

Two days later

Alex pushed the door open for Paige. They were about an hour to the south of the theatre. Alex had the hood of his jumper drawn deep into his face. And Paige wore the red hue to her hair. He was no longer sure this kind of disguise actually did anything to conceal who they were. And yet, it was what they had.

He was nervous. There was no point in denying it. He had not left Paige out of his sight once. She had frowned at him, at even rolled her eyes. There was mentioning of him being over protective. But Alex did not care. They had taken her right from under his nose once. There was no guarantee it could not happen again.

“Third floor”, was what he said. The building was not abandoned. For once it was not a skeleton. They had running water here, central heating. It was not new, and certainly not high-end. But it would keep them warm even if just for a few days.

Alex brought the keys out of his pocket when they arrived at the apartment labelled as ‘3-09’. He unlocked the door and the both of them slipped inside.

Without her prompt he started into explanations as soon as the door fell shut behind them. “This would be only temporary. We need to find a place to hide the key.” To be able to actually bring a key when either of them had to flee was unlikely. So they would have to hide it on site, here, somewhere. “But there’s hot water, heating. Three beds.” He strode ahead of her through a hallway running the length of the apartment. At its end, he opened the closet doors. “Clothes for you, me and Ben. Cash. Passports.”

He exhaled, pushed his hood off of his head and looked down at his fiancé. “This is the first stop.” His eyes sought hers. They had spoken about finding new places outside of the theatre. Somewhere to hide, some place to find one another again. Alex had done just that. With Chris’s help he had dug out about half a dozen places. Some still needed work. All of them still needed more supplies. Paige and he would have to come up with a plan. What place to stop by first, where to head next? How long to stay where and how to mark a place as ‘made’? It had to be elaborate and they would have to memorise it down to the smallest detail.

“It’s definitely not the theatre…” he murmured, not looking forward the time when this place would ever actually be needed.

Black was an easy pick, but she had never thought that it looked right on her, so it was back to red for their outing. Leggings, boots, a pair of loose tops, a jacket and scarf. It was going to get warmer at some point. The layers, though, offered both insulation and concealment to a degree. There was a hood on her jacket, but it struck her as suspicious if they both tugged theirs up onto their heads. If it started to snow, maybe.

He hovered, and for the most part, she allowed it. His reasoning pertained to their last shared outing, when they had attempted to go clothing shopping of all things.

It didn’t matter how many times she tied to point out that she was sure their meeting with SentS had been accidental considering the lack of back-up the unit that had taken her had received. He still hovered, his hand continuously seeking hers out and drawing her closer to his side anytime they passed anyone on the sidewalk. There had been a time in their lives when that would have seemed normal, him drawing her in closer. Now it was out of a type of necessity to keep close to each other’s sides. When they had stopped at a corner mart so she could pee and he had stood in the little bathroom with her, she had tried to focus on anything other than the fact that he was all but staring at her. And then she had tried to suppress a bubble of laughter over the silliness of it all.

Third floor.

He slid the key into the door’s main lock and turned the bolt over, sliding it out of place before he turned the knob and let them into the little apartment. It was only strange because there were other tenants in the building that were people they didn’t know.

He took her down the hall, she noted the pair of bedrooms that sat across from one another, then took her to the end where closet doors turned outward and a pair of backpacks sat on the floor, a few articles of clothing on the lower shelf. Things they would need. When she had created a similar setup in her own apartment before she had had Ben, she had never thought she would actually have to recreate a similar attempt. They used to call it a ‘bug out’.

First stop. If it was him to leave with Ben, he would manage to get her quicker than she could were it her in that placement instead. He could fly. She could walk.

“Three beds.” She repeated. “Are you planning to sleep in your own, then?” She tried to make light of the situation. She stepped back out of the doorway and instead leaned against the frame. “This is good.” It was small enough they could keep track of everything within and around it, but not tiny enough they would step on each other. It was close enough to the theater to not constitute a half day hike, but it was far enough removed to not be easily associated.

If they needed to leave and move on before the other arrived, they needed to create a type of coding, breadcrumbs, to leave behind that would indicate the next move. A brush left behind, a half used tube of toothpaste, a cracked window. It could be days, or months, or years before they had to enact anything like this. One of them leaving with Ben would be easy. But what if- she bit her lip and shut down the direction of her thoughts. It was a valid concern, but there was no point building it up without necessity. It had irked at her thoughts since they had discussed Jaxon in the kitchen with Gabe and Cait.

Three beds.

“What do we do if there’s ever more than three of us?” She offered the question carefully and quietly, afraid to voice it too loud in case the universe was listening in.

Everything in the past few days felt so excruciatingly sobering. As if life had begun throwing all the switches for the red lights to remind them that while honeymoon was yet to be had, a wedding to happen was no reason for life to suddenly getting any better for them. They were mutants. Alex found himself rather high up on the most-wanted list due to the connection to his brothers, and he knew that if the Services ever got word about Ben … It was a thought he preferred not to finish even if he knew he would eventually have to. The only chance to stay ahead of them, to stay safe for any of them, was to anticipate the Service’s moves and be one step ahead of them – at all times.

So it was that Paige and him were – again – out on their own. Just not for anything fun like clothes shopping – they were safehouse shopping if such thing existed. But again, Alex was willing to do anything if it only ensured that even if things went south he would still have his son and wife there with him. A small smile flitted across his face when in his mind he already referred to her as his wife. That knot still had to be tied, but the ring on her finger promised that it would not be long now.

He had spoken to the theatre residents. Apparently, Jon Silvercloud was an ordained minister. Partially due to his heritage, partially because he had gotten the certificate online while still at the School. Now Alex just had to find a way to bring Paige before Jon without latter knocking out the man who was supposed to marry them in holy matrimony.

That was when Paige repeated her words, noting that it was three beds. He smiled when she asked about whether he would sleep on his own. Quirking an eyebrow at her, he just stepped up closer to Paige and slipped his hands around her mid-section. It felt good to hear her approval even if he still had his trouble wrapping his mind around just what they were doing here right now.

“A block down you have the underground and the road running by outside is a central connection … lots of cabs. Takes you about twenty minutes down to the station for some greyhound connections.” They would have to figure out the possible routes to take, but for now being close to any kind of means to get out of New York was good.

He had an idea of where he wanted her to go if using all of these means for escape ever became necessary. But just as he was once more beginning to spin out a possible path to the imagined destination, she interrupted his train of thoughts. For a moment, he just looked at her, his lips parted as if he was about to say something else. But no words came.

More than three. “I wasn’t going to sleep in a bed alone…”, he murmured, sounding distracted as her question continued to draw its circle sin his mind. Alex’s eyes remained on her face, shifting continuously back and forth between her eyes. A lot closer to the eye colour he was used to and loved this time.

He moved his head back just a little, as if he needed to get a better look at her. “Is there something you wanna tell me?”

When his hands slipped around her, she settled and leaned somewhat into him which made her very aware of every movement he made. When he lifted his head back in response to her question, she held her breath and considered clarifying, but she wanted him to consider the direction she had alluded to because it was a very real possibility. It seemed, more often than not, that all it took was a look and she was shoving him into a room or a closet and sliding a lock into place. And he was always ready and willing to comply with every action if he wasn’t the one doing the initiating.

At one point in her life, his silence might have unnerved her, may have forced her to wonder about what he was thinking, but she knew where he was headed because she had put the thought purposely there for him. She had considered it before, but it had never stuck quite so sure as it had once Wanda had explained what it was Caitlin had been purposely taken for. More than just her individual mutation.

Was there anything that she wanted to tell him?

“No.” She finally told him. “Not that I’m aware of at the moment, anyway.” It was too soon to tell for the time being and she would need at least another week before she could give substance to the potential. “But the possibility is very real.”

She turned herself about in his arms to face and set her hands against him, twisting her fingers into his sweatshirt before she looked up at him. “I know it’s difficult for you to comprehend, but all I want to do is tear your clothes off of your body and have my way with you near every waking moment of every single day.” She bit at her lower lip as she let her eyes travel upward, then she lifted her brows.

“We haven’t discussed this.” Ben had been a complete accident that she had been entirely unwilling to part with. Even then, though, they had not outright attempted to prevent the likelihood of conception. When they were still at the school, it was easy enough to show up for an injection every three months. After that, it was far more difficult to just walk into a doctor’s office when half the world wanted their kind dead. “I love Ben more than anything in this world.” He would even come before Alex. “I always thought that I would have half a dozen children when I was younger, but the world is different now. I will gladly give you all the children that you want.”

If he wanted ten, then they could try for ten. If he only wanted two, then they would only have one more. If all he wanted was Ben, then she was content.

“SentS wanted Caitlin because of her and Gabe’s baby.” She dropped her eyes to the hollow of his throat. “And I’m not on anything,” she swallowed, “because I haven’t been with anyone else.” Sexually. She had tried dating. Twice. And it had not fared well.

Alex was waiting. Not even aware until this moment how much he wanted her to say yes. It surprised him. Why was he suddenly wanting all of these things? Alex Summers, the guy who had not been able to have a proper relationship for longer than a few weeks. And now Paige was wearing his ring, and he found himself wanting a bigger family. He had no idea whether his wanting of this was the right thing to do at this point. He had not been there for Paige’s pregnancy with Ben. Would that have changed anything? Did he want this to have the experience he had previously missed out on? Even Alex knew latter was not the path to go.

Still, he could not prevent the small pang of disappointment when Paige said no. He pushed a kiss to her cheek just shy of her ear. She added, how the possibility was very real. This brought a small, sly grin onto his face. It was indeed. Neither of them was passing up on any possibility for sex. And usually they were not using any kind of protection.

Paige turned in his arms, facing him now and her hands came to settle against his chest. Her words made him pull up his eyesbrows. Noooo, no, not at all, he thought but he knew it was not the truth. There were moments when he did have his troubles. After her anger had been so all-encompassing. Grief of five years had come bubbling up and had made her lunge for him in an attempt to slap the notion of leaving her side five years earlier out of him subsequently. It had been there on the forefront so prominently that Alex had levelled himself. He had drawn back and given her the opportunity to reach for him when she needed, to push him away when she felt it was required.

In a way, Paige had reached for him, to push him away, to reach for him … her own, chaotic was to work through her grief. Alex had been there for every step of the way. He had reined in his own sexual desires for that time. Even the occasional kisses he had stolen from her had been few and far between. It was in stark contrast to how things were now.

Her brows came northwards as she offered the words to him. What was hard for him to comprehend, down the line, was not that she wanted sex. It was that he had offered her his heart on a sleeve – warts and all – and she still wanted him, wanted him all the more, would even marry him.

Paige Summers. Alex found himself looking forward to it with a giddiness similar to the kind Ben displayed when ice cream was promised.

“You bite at your lip like that”, he murmured as she went on to point out that they had not yet discussed this. “There will not be lots of discussing.” A smile ghosted across his face before he made himself focus once more. She spoke of Ben, and his smile returned. A soft, gentle rendition of it. Alex nodded. A mother and a child. He, even as a father, would only ever come in second. Evolution had meant for it that way.

Paige went on, and Alex knew this moment here it was part of a shift in their relationship that had happened the night when Caitlin had been taken by Jaxon. The honeymoon was over so to speak, even if the vows had yet to be exchanged. They had to talk, had to discuss and put things out in the open. If they were to make a life together, he could not just expect them to keep going like they had all this time.

“I want another”, Alex said, his hands locking behind Paige’s back as he drew her closer yet. His tone was soft, just above a whisper. His throat was a little dry just for this moment. “I’ve no idea what will be in three years, four … I’ve never had a set plan for how many children I want.” He contemplated the things she had said, trying to speak from his heart in response without completely forgetting his head in the matter.

“I missed that time with Ben and I want that. With you. I’m not sure though whether that makes it the wrong reason to want another child. But that’s not all. I want Ben to have what Tony and Lexie have, what Scott and Gabe and I have … should have.” He shrugged. Gabriel as a topic still made him second guess himself.

“If we had a ranch somewhere, in the middle of damned nowhere… I’d say let’s go for six, or seven.” His grin turned a little sheepish. “But here … like this … now … I think I’d drive you nuts when you’re pregnant. After them trying to snatch you, then Caitlin …” he shrugged, the thought stirred a fear than ran very deep.

And then his mind landed at her admission to not have been with anyone else. It was a thought that just sat there, in his mindspace and he wasn’t sure what to do with it. In ten years, he had been the only man in her life. It humbled him, to say the least. A girl like Paige … and her heart had been his for almost a decade.

“Do you want to check out options to get contraception? I could see about getting a big pack of Trojans.” He shrugged. Probably easier than getting her back on the pill or the shot. “I’m sure Caitlin can help us finding a way to get you on the pill.” A single shoulder went up in a half-sided shrug. “I love all the sex we’re having. Sometimes it feels like trying to make up for four years, and I’m fully committed to that …” A small chuckle. Almost boyish.

He slipped his hands under her shirt at her back, pushing them in under seams of her pants to setting his fingers on the swell of her buttocks. “Help me learn.” Alex nodded. “Would it better to wait? Or have Ben and … more children closer in age?” He was surprised. These were things he had never before considered in his life. Alex had not even been aware of the fact that these things could be issues to discuss in the first place.

[In-Character] [Post #90]
It took her a moment to realize that she was holding her breath, waiting for him to tell her what he wanted. It was a strange place to be in, to be content with Ben, even when a part of her wanted more of her and Alex, more versions. Would another boy look just the same as Ben? Would a girl take Alex’s blue eyes rather than her shifting teal? Would they be taller like him, or more average like her? Ben was only three, and she had wondered for every moment of his existence whom he would take after the most. And there had been moments when she had held him when she had wondered what others would have been like.

“I want another.” He finally told her, drew her closer, and she felt herself exhale.

She could see him pitch back and forth between his reasoning, wanting more yet balking in the face of the uncertainty their future held. They were both mutants, Ben was a mutant, the likelihood of them producing further mutants was exceedingly high. She wasn’t even sure if they could have non-mutant children. And she had nearly become an anxious wreck bringing Ben into the world and hiding him away from everyone. Because of how Alex had died.

And yet.

Alex was there, and he had already proven the ends he was willing to go to in order to keep them safe. And she wanted more of his babies, as much as she would assure him that she was content with Ben-and she could be-that he confessed he at least wanted one more, it did something to her insides and made her ache and crave. For more than just his body and his heart, she wanted every possible future, whatever any of it brought. His comment about living in the middle of nowhere, that was the ‘if’. But they didn’t live there, they lived where they were because in most regard, it was safe. In numbers. Him with his brothers.

If only the world would tun, shift back to how it was.

She smirked at his comment about driving her nuts. “You think that would only happen if I were pregnant?” That was a frequent occurrence, though she had to admit, it was less often. The perception of the implied formatting of ‘nuts’ though could vary greatly. He drove her nuts when he encouraged Ben to use his abilities and push them; he drove her nuts when he stepped out of the bathroom in little more than a towel.

The manner in which he could remind her of his absence, yet spin it just right that she had to smile regardless, it was a skill she he had always possessed. Drawing some manner of humor out of something dark.

“I don’t..” she pursed her lips, “I don’t know what the right thing to do is.” She confessed, even as his hands pushed into the back of her jeans. “That doesn’t help.” She shook her head even as she smiled. “I don’t know how to space children out, I don’t know what is going to work for us.” His comment about how he wanted Ben to have at least someone else, the way Lex and Tony had each other and a soon to be addition, the way he had Alex and Gabe. She knew that kind of bond, she had siblings in droves. “We have about two weeks to figure it out before it becomes an issue again.” Because she was good at math, at least, if anything in life.

“But I do want you to see.” She said, more quietly as one hand slipped to her sternum. “To feel it happen.” It had been surreal when she had first been able to feel Ben from the outside. “I don’t think we should make a decision right now.” It was the first time they had openly discussed it with each other. “Like I said, we still have about two weeks without needing to jump on anything right this second.” She tilted her head slightly. “Right this second, though…you said there were three beds?”
