A Sentinel Services' transport was left to burn, the solitary form of a tiny mutant extracted. It wasn't supposed to happen the way that it did, it was just...coincidence. What started out as a one stop pick up for a single individual, ended with a toddler to boot. Maybe that had been the point.

It was a strange thing to watch an outpost burning when she had known it to have been destroyed before her birth. A new direction, a new path, something she had been told would occur, even if her world remained fixed as it was. It was difficult to wrap her mind around it completely. She had been told it wouldn’t shift the way she had thought it might have, but rather, a new line would be created, because they already existed. Dozens of them, hundreds, perhaps infinite possibilities, every shift in a person’s choice, a change created something else.

The boy was sobbing, thick tears streaming down his cheeks and she bent at the waist to retrieve him. She had felt it the moment she had torn open the back of the truck, the familiarity that tickled at the back of her thoughts.

She had told Leif to stay down and out of sight. He had been the reason, she had thought, that she had been deposited exactly where she had appeared. The fate had been vague enough with her instructions, citing that changes had already been made that hadn’t been meant to, the people were being forced to meet to soon, others being relieved of their lives sooner than intended. Trying to make sense of whether or not Kitty had been meant to die, then, was confusing.

“It’s okay.” She murmured to the smaller boy as she set him against her hip and wrapped an arm abought his little body. A thumb wiped at his cheek as she moved back towards where she had left Leif behind. She opened her mind and let it connect with the smaller one, a half smile tipping the corner of her mouth at the chaos she let herself be absorbed into. The substance to his thoughts was sporadic, but she reminded herself that he was tiny and focused instead on the texture of his emotions, soothing their ragged edges.

He hiccupped and she looked over at Leif as he stood back up. It was weird that even at his age he was taller than she was. He had always been bigger than her, so that wasn’t what was strange. But seeing him the age he had been when she had been born and he was taller than her adult self was something she had never expected. So she wondered if he had ever been a child.

“Do you fly?” She finally asked the boy she had assumed she had arrived for. Whether or not the toddler in her arms could was pointless as he lacked direction. They were a long walk from the Theater District.

Xander felt disorientated, his head spinning as he stepped through the portal made for him by the twins. They had finally figured out when the change in the timeline happened for him and agreed to send him back to that point. Wanda had found it interesting that he could see the changes in the timeline, but that hadn’t mattered to him. All he wanted was his sisters and father back.

So, he hadn’t even hesitated and went through that portal with the sole intention of fixing what had gone wrong.

Blinking with his eyes a few times, leaning against the nearest wall he got his bearings and then got a move on. He was on a timeframe.

Thing was though, that he had no idea if he had made it on time. So, he got his pace up, something pulling at him that he had to hurry, but at the same time he felt like he was already too late.

When he rounded the corner, he came to a halt when his suspicions were proven right. He was too late, because there was his cousin and she was carrying his younger self away from the truck that had been transporting him. Well, fuck. That wasn’t good, because if she saved him now, he doesn’t end up with his sisters and the three of them won’t be rescued together. And then his father would die, when he would find out that two of his kids were still being held by Sentinel Services.

Growling he closed the distance between him and Gabby, who had caught up with … Was that Leif? Didn’t matter.

“You couldn’t help yourself, could you?” He called out to her when she asked the boy if he could fly. “You had to go and be a god damn hero like your father.” Because his uncle was much the same, and it had frustrated his father to no end.

Leif looked at him with wide eyes, and he just waved it off. “Not you, you she could save.” Although, the boy’s mother had been the one to do so and had died in the process. So, had Gabby altered this as well? He looked at his younger self and grimaced. What was at play here?

“What have you been doing, Gab?” He looked at his cousin, and he wasn’t sure if he should be angry or confused… or both.

There was a strange shift about her, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it was exactly. Just something different, some sort of change in the atmosphere. She tried to shake it away, wondering if Leif was in fully control of his abilities and perhaps it was him that she was sensing. Then she looked at the smaller being attached to her and considered his own mutation sparking even in toddlerhood. It wasn’t that unusual, but she would have felt it from him and likely before any manifestation considering the immediate familiarity.

Leif opened his mouth to respond when another voice cut him off. Her eyes rolled briefly towards the sky in the wake of his initial prodding question. She knew the sound of his voice almost as well as she knew her mother’s. That happened when you spent the majority of your life in someone’s presence. His follow up commentary had her turning like a cracked whip.

Xander let his attention swing around her and briefly towards Leif, offered him some cobbled greeting, but all she saw and felt was red.

He looked up to address her further and she barely gave him a half second to blabber whatever it was he thought was important enough for her to listen to in the wake of his specially chosen accusations before she manipulated the air around them into a heated sphere of plasma and shoved it directly towards her cousin, dead center of the chest. If he thought he could run his mouth, regardless of situation and circumstance, and indirectly insult her father, she had no qualms with knocking him on his ass.

The boy in her arms hummed for a moment, a subtle snap of electricity slipping from across her shoulder and round into his hair. It would dissipate well enough, his body would absorb and metabolize it, just like the man that thought he could snap at her.

She reached for the burning back end of the transportation vehicle and hurled that at Xander as well, just for good measure.

Then she was back looking at Leif. “You didn’t answer my question.” And she barely afforded him a second more of her time before she closed the meager distance between them, curled her free arm about his waist, and lifted the three of them into the air. It didn’t matter so much if he could fly, she had simply meant to be polite. At his age, he needed to utilize his abilities as frequently as possible to sharpen them. If she pushed him, maybe he would be stronger and better sooner.

Maybe he could change things.

Somehow, he knew that he wasn’t reaching her with his words, Gabby looked at him in a way that made him stop talking right before she hit him with a plasma sphere. Or tried too, anyway. He stumbled back a little but absorbed most of the sphere into his body. It had always amazed him that their family had a shared energy resistance.

Xander could absorb his father’s completely without hassle, Ben and Tony were nothing more but a tickle but Gabby… she always packed a punch and it took him a bit longer to absorb it all. His uncle Gabe was much the same. He wondered if his other uncle would have had the same effect on him but since the man had died before Xander had been born, he was left wondering.

He growled at her, shaking his arms to get rid of the excessive energy that suddenly burned within him, that he barely missed a burning vehicle being thrown at him.

“What the effing hell?” He shouted out, raising his hands and blasting the object in half before it could even hit him. While he was dealing with that he heard Leif speak up that he could fly and it made Xander curse some more. She was going to try and ditch him.

What was her problem?

Another growl left his mouth as he propelled himself upward, and went in pursuit of his cousin who was starting to piss him off. Okay maybe he should have talked to her differently but she had already started to screw with the timeline and that meant there weren’t many options left to get his sisters out before it would be too late.

“Gabby! Would you please stop?” He yelled at her, closing in on her figure. “We need to talk!” And maybe put his younger self back at the scene so he could be taken back into custody by SentS and hopefully change the timeline back.

Even if his sisters were annoying at times, he loved them to pieces.

And his dad… according to the new timeline he had lost him when he had only been four-years old. Killed in an attempt to get Pearl and Liz out. But that’s not how Xander remembered it. How he had been told that they had been located through a secret file, provided by Carol Coleman. Both him and his sisters saved all at once. Which had almost given his parents a stroke to find out that they had gone from zero to four kids in just seconds.

It had brought his uncle Gabe much glee by telling that story over and over again, especially showing the look on his brother’s face. Welcome to parenthood.

“Gabby!” He shouted again, which was all he could do. Not that he was planning on shooting them from the sky. Although… no he could already hear his mother tell him off for even contemplating shooting a toddler and a teen out of the sky. Grimacing he added more energy to his propulsion to ramp up his speed.

“Could you please stop? I’m sorry, okay!”

It didn’t matter that Leif could fly, at that point it wasn’t about simply taking to the air, it was about leaving Xander as far behind them as was possible. Bigger Xander, anyway. Tiny Xander couldn’t run his mouth. His little body heaved as he tried to catch his breath and seemed to be caught between screaming and tucking himself more snuggly against her. Leif was at least semi-content with keeping his big flappy mouth shut as well as she pushed herself and the two younger boys away from the scene. The sooner she returned Leif to the theater, the less likely it was that Kitty would ever leave it to track him down.

She could hear Xander behind her, could feel him dispel the plasma she had hurled at him. The moment he was airborne, she simply knew it.

He called to her, but there was nothing he could say at the moment to yield her. His anger and his confusion coupled and flared out against her perception. She wasn’t sure she could even fault him for time because he looked exactly as he had the last time she had seen him, which seemed like only minutes prior.

Xander pushed himself harder and she tightened her grip about the tinier version of him. It was strange, that he was behind her and sucked against her side like a leach. At least tiny him wasn’t crying anymore. If anything, there was a sense of confused excitement that curled around the toddler and he almost basked in the sudden empathic connection.

“You’re a goddamn dick, Xander.” She snapped back at him when she glanced slightly over her shoulder. “Go drown yourself in the-” fucking river was what she wanted to tell him, yet she pressed her lips tightly together for Tiny Xander’s benefit, her mother’s angry face suddenly bright in her mind’s eye.

As she forced herself to slow her pace, Tiny Xander hiccupped and expelled a wave of heat, something she was not accustomed to. The way she understood it, though, when any of them had been small, their abilities were just there and seemed to present themselves oddly enough. Her hold about Leif laxed to give him enough wriggle room to breathe.

“I have somewhere to be, so either shut your stupid mouth and keep out of my way, or I’ll make you.”

And as usual she was ignoring him. No matter how often he would call out to her, she would just go on and ignore him. That just pissed him off. Xander didn’t have time to play these kinds of games. His future depended on it. Literally. But she had an advantage, and he couldn’t get caught up completely.

Enough for him to hear her snap at him that he was a dick. “Back to the name calling?” He snapped back, trying to ignore the rest that came after that. He growled softly, wondering why she was being so bitchy about all of this. He just wanted to talk, explain things to her. That what she currently was doing, would change his life. Their lives.

Then she slowed down, and he was able to catch up to her. Looking at the boys she was holding he let out a sigh.

“Why are you always so hostile?” He asked her with another sigh. “And you can’t make me, you’re holding two kids.” Xander looked at his tiny self, and the kid looked back at him with curious eyes. He looked so innocent, not yet aware that his life was going to change.

“I’m not a kid.” Leif piped up.
“You are.” Xander replied. Leif kept silent, and Xander moved his attention back to his cousin. He had to reason with her, make her see that what she was doing was fucking his life up. And not just in a small ‘Oh, your hair colour changed’ kind of way, but more in the ‘people vanished from your life’ kind of way.

“I know where you’re going, and I get why you saved them both…” He made sure he flew in her line of sight. “… but you just fucked up my timeline. Our timeline.” He could hear Leif snort, and Xander realised that he had cursed in front of the kids.

“Gabby, listen to me. Please.” And then something dawned on him… what if this wasn’t his Gabby to begin with?

Well, damn.

Xander had yet to see her hostile in the moment at hand. She had a direction to follow and she had been dropped in the exact moment for a reason. There was no reason to ask questions, she knew there was nothing to be done about her time, that it would apparently progress as it was already set on course to do. It all still hurt her head to think about, but she had been approached by whomever the hell the other woman had been, claimed to be, or actually was, and she had ended up right where she had. She had assumed she was there for Leif, that he had been the person of interest, that that precise moment had been chosen to curb his and his mother’s fate. And then Xander. Coincidence, perhaps. Perhaps not.

He thought that her hold kids was going to stop her from shoving him out of her way? There was a partial urge to laugh at the thought that he assumed she could release the children and keep them suspended where she chose and move them where she wanted in order to offer him near her complete attention.

Maybe someone had hit him in the head.

She wasn’t one of her siblings that was bound to the presence of a twin. Her siblings were stronger together, but that was also their weakness. She lacked their strength when paired, and she lacked their weaknesses when separated.

Leif attempted a retort and Xander snapped back without missing a beat. Someday, Leif would be bigger than him.

Xander attempted to explain further and she felt herself shift back away from him, lifted a hand to cup her palm against the side of the toddler’s head. Language, asshole. She snapped at him.

Gabby shook her head. “That isn’t how it works.” She shook her head. Fucked up their timeline. Because it wasn’t already so ridiculously out of state that there was anything left to screw up. Sure. “You’re out of your gourd.” She lowered herself slightly to put herself at his level where they hovered. “Should I put Leif back so that Kitty ends up dead?” She looked slightly towards Tiny Xander. “Or him?” disjointed confusion pulse around the smaller child, unable to fully grasp the situation, the people he was suddenly forced into the company of. Then there was a sliver of fear when he seemed to take the reigns of the link between them and was exposed to some measure of her own emotions.

She could recall the woman who sent her there, noting that the direction of time had already been altered and fractured into a hundred new directions that hadn’t existed before. “You’re wasting my time.” Her grip around the children tightened. She had somewhere to be, someone to see.

Xander glared at Gabby when she pushed her words into his mind, to mind his language. Whatever. She had ruined his life, and she didn’t even realise it. So when she started to lecture him on how it doesn’t work like that, he let out a low growl. And then she had to tell him that he was out of his mind for even thinking like that.

He didn’t even know how to start explaining to her, mostly because she didn’t see any fault in what she just had done.

Which was quite obvious when she asked if she should just put Leif back, or tiny him.

“My mom ends up dead?” Leif looked horrified and Xander in turn glared at his cousin. Nice going, idiot. He told her.
“No, she doesn’t, your mom is fine.” He told the younger boy to reassure him. She hadn’t been dead in his timeline until something had changed. So, she might as well have been, he didn’t know anymore. Everything was weird in his head. There was his old life, but his new life wanted to take over. He was basically living with two sets of memories and it was driving him nuts.

“I’m wasting your time?” He snorted, shaking his head. “You’re not listening to me, you never do.” He sounded annoyed, dropping his gaze to Leif who was now frowning and switching his gaze between Gabby and him. Like he was trying to figure something out. Good luck with that, Xander thought.

“You have no idea what you just have set in motion by rescuing younger me.” He glanced at the toddler who was clamping himself tightly to Gabby. Then he looked around to see where the hell they were even going, which made him narrow his eyes.

“Are we heading towards the theatre?” He asked, because if memory served right, his parents were there. Alive. Both of them. So why was Gabby in a rush to get there? Was there someone who she needed to see? He tried to think, tried to dig through the memories of the new timeline… Her dad?

“Gabby…” He started but didn’t even know what to say, so he sighed. “We really need to talk, in private.” Because even though little him didn’t understand what they were saying, Leif was looking at them with great interest and he wasn’t about to give away future details.
