All these questions. And all of a sudden, Alex wondered whether he should have known their answers all along. Where one question came through, another followed on foot. Was this being responsible? That everything was questioned? Probed and revisited over and over again? Alex found it exhausting, and yet he knew he – no they – needed the answers to these questions.

He chuckled when she asked about that driving her nuts thing would only happen when she was pregnant. Alex knew better than to mention that he loved driving her nuts whatever meaning she wanted to imply here. Alex knew that it drove her up the walls when he let Ben push the boundaries with his abilities. He understood it, too. And yet, he found it important to let the boy figure out what he had at his disposal. There might come the very dark day where Ben Alexander Summers would need those abilities. Alex did not like entertaining such notions. And yet, the option that their son ended up alone in this world was bigger than either of them liked.

Alex slipped his hand out of the back of her jeans again and then he pulled a bit of a face – not without a gleam of humour to his eyes. “Wait what … you don’t know? If you don’t know, how am I supposed to know?” The question was rhetorical at best. Alex knew that that was not how this thing worked. Growing meant that he needed to make decisions. He needed to find answers where she could not. That was what the kind of relationship the both of them wanted to have was all about, wasn’t it?

Two weeks. The prospect made his heart jump a little. Two weeks maybe and they were looking at creating a sibling for their son.

Then her tone turned softer and her words put the widest smile on his face. She was not opposed to having another child. And Alex knew that the chance that Paige would just refuse to risk it again was big and very likely after what she had gone through. He listened to her words, her thoughts, smiled eventually when she pointed out that there were beds that apparently needed testing. Alex laughed, inclined his head and simply kissed her, accepting the proposal.

About an hour later, both of them naked with all of their clothes on the floor somewhere in between all these three beds, Alex drew both arms around Paige as she was half way on top of his chest and half way beside him. “I don’t want to wait”, he told her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. He felt so pleasantly spent despite the fact that he had planned for the both of them to look at three more places today. That had to wait now though. Alex’s mind was going elsewhere.

“I wasted four years”, he added, his tone lower as he pushed to the side and thus put Paige on her back himself half way on top of her. There was the woman with the red hair and the eyecolour that was not quite the one he was used to. But he was growing accustomed to it. She was as much the woman he loved as the one with the blonde hair.

“Jon’s an ordained minister”, he offered, his eyes slipping from one of hers to the other as he gauged her reaction. “Do you think you can hold off on punching him for half an hour? Cuz I will take even him as long as you and I are married.” It just wouldn’t work if Jon was out cold because of Paige husking to concrete and once more sharing what she thought about the man being too drunk to make the connection when he should have had.

Alex was not okay with entire matter either. Yet, there was no way changing it now. And down the line, the now mattered. The four years ago had been messed up to begin with – and that had not been Jon’s fault.

“Let’s get Ben and let’s get married. Today.” Alex had never felt so sure about anything in his life – at least that was what he felt like in this moment. What was the point in putting it off?! “And then let’s see if in two weeks … it happens.” He shrugged, brushing at wild strands framing her face. “And if it doesn’t maybe it will a month after.” His gaze sought hers, shifting back and forth between eyes he knew so well. “I’m not making a decision here… I’m just saying, let’s see where it goes.

“I could wait six months for Ben’s little brother”, he smirked at that. “If that’s what we need to do, we’ll do it. But I won’t wait to marry you … let’s do it today…”

Her fingertips drew lazy swirling patters across his chest. The only description that she had for herself in the moment was content. He was warm, stripped, perfectly made for her to drape herself half across. His arms curled around her and she lifted her chin slightly, catching a kiss against her hairline and she smiled dreamily. He told her that he didn’t want to wait, and she prompted her brain to link up with what he was saying to her, leaving her to wonder what he was actually addressing that he didn’t want to wait for.

He shifted and he confessed he had wasted the time he had previously cited his intention to make up for. His motions rolled her onto her back and her took up her position form a moment prior to linger somewhat beside her, somewhat atop her.

Then Silvercloud’s name tumbled off the end of his tongue and she pressed her lips together. Ordained minister. He could kiss her but with his ordained mi-

Oh.

She felt her heart skip a few beats when he carried on, insisting that they return for Ben and get married then and there. That very day. No waiting, no putting of the inevitable. He had asked her to marry him, and she had replied that she would. There was no grand ceremony or celebration to plan, there was no need to, and she had no desire to do so. She had already told him that all she wanted was him and Ben. It didn’t matter if all they had to stand with them were his brothers, her brother, and everyone the theater housed. That was all that she wanted. A wedding was meant to be tended by those the couple cared for most.

She lifted up enough to push her elbows out behind her for support. Get married today.

His follow up had her brows lifting slightly in response. Just see what happened in two weeks. Maybe it would happen, maybe it wouldn’t. There was no way to change anything in that moment, just as they couldn’t go back and rewrite the last several years. It was a wait and see.

He could wait six months for Ben’s little brother, and she snorted slightly, the attempted laughter cutting short when he decided he wouldn’t wait any longer to marry her.

“Are you asking me?” She tipped her head slightly and reached towards him, slipped a hand beneath his chin and drew him upward. “Yes, Alex Summers, I would marry you today.” She smiled and pressed a kiss against his lips. When she thought about it, she couldn’t really rationalize what it would mean to wait. Wait to see if she wanted to marry him in a day, or a week, or a month’s time. She knew that she loved him, and if her heart had held onto him for as long as it had, even seemingly beyond death, there was little in the way that it was likely to change. “I already love you.” She had kept their son hidden away from the world because she had loved him, both of them. There was no changing what she felt, or questioning it. It was there with no where else to go.

“Maybe Ben wants a little sister.” She pecked another kiss against his lips and then pushed her hand through her hair, drawing away the red. She had bought a dress.

Was he asking her? Alex’s lips split into a smile that showed both rows of pearly whites. Alex let Paige draw his chin up a little so his eyes found hers. There was something dancing in her eyes and Alex knew he would happily spend the rest of his life finding all the things he could do to put that something into those eyes he knew so well.

His smile widened when she once more gave him confirmation. Yes, today.
They would get married today.
Finally.

Alex let his breath slip out of his nose when her lips captured his and then just gazed at her when she moved her head back ever so slightly to remind him that she did already love him. Good. Finally one thing in his life was as it ought to be. She quipped about Ben possibly wanting a little sister, and her words fed into the smile he already wore. A little girl. Like Lexie, but their own. A little princess, with her mother’s vibrant smile, maybe his cheeky grin? Alex knew he would love this child as much as he did his son. No matter whose smile that boy or girl inherited, whose eyes.

“Maybe”, he said, capturing her lips once more when the red was gone from her hair. He pushed up on his hands, hovering over her for just a moment. “We could ask our son.” His grin turned boyish as he lowered himself to renew their kiss. “What do you say, Mrs. Summers?”

Then Alex pushed his hands through underneath her, bringing Paige up onto his lap. Both arms coming around her, he deepened the kiss, restarting what had begun earlier. And it was just a little less than an hour later, than Alex sat on the edge of the bed, pulling his jeans back on. He looked at the phone lying on the bed next to him. He had sent Beth a text-message, asking the telepath whether her husband was up for a small ceremony in a few hours.

At the same time, he waited for a response from Caitlin. He had asked whether she could possibly put Ben in a quick bath or even a shower. That boy certainly know how to get dirt everywhere whenever he was running about with his cousins.

He thought of the tux he had stashed in his oldest brother’s closet. Dark blue, complete with a silver vest and tie. A smile on his lips, he tried to remember when Paige had last seen him in a tux. He came up empty.

The phone buzzed and Alex unlocked the screen to check the message. It was a photo. Ben – along with both of his cousins – sat in a bubble bath. The only part of the boy’s face he could see was nose and mouth, ladder wide open in that kind of happy and boundless laughter so often only children were capable of. “Look”, he said, pushing the phone over to Paige who was getting dressed as well.

Alex looked around the apartment, knowing that the rest of the places he had lined up would have to wait for another day.

- - - - - - - - - - - - FF by an hour - - - - - - - - - - - -

Alex climbed out of the shower in his brother’s quarters. Emma Frost, dressed in unusual shades of blue, was just beyond the door, oddly busy in getting his tuxedo out of its protective bag. Scott had wandered off to find Gabriel.

Wrapping a towel around his waist, Alex pushed open the bath room door to find Emma busy with three jasmine blossoms she was attaching to a pin that would go onto the lapel of his suit. He watched the woman in silence for a moment.

“I know you’re there”, she murmured.
Alex could not remember ever having heard the woman’s voice sound so soft. “You’ve changed.”
Emma turned around as she put down the flower pin. “As have you, Mr. Summers.” She pulled her eyebrows up as she saw him standing there half-naked. “I’ll leave you to it.”

“Thank you.” He said, nodding as Emma strode past him towards the door. “Emma?”
She turned, just as she reached the door. Alex was certain the telepath already knew what he was about to say.
“I’m glad you’re back.”
“As am I …” she said just as she slipped out the door.

Then Alex locked the door behind her and went about getting dressed. He wondered just exactly where his plan to have a small thing in jeans and shirt with just Paige and Ben as a ceremony had turned into … this. Probably at the very moment when he had sent Caitlin a text, asking her to bathe Ben. Then again, who was he to complain?! He had gone and bought a mini-version of his own tuxedo for his boy exactly for this occasion.

She stared for a long time at her reflection, as if it would somehow make sense of the butterflies churning in her gut. There was no reason to feel nervous, she wasn’t even sure if that was what she felt. Perhaps it was simply anticipation. Perhaps it was the fact that other people would be there. She had been exceedingly honest when she had claimed she would have happily married him in her pajamas, just him and Ben and whomever to preside over.

“Your heart is going to break right out of your chest if you don’t relax.” Beth commented as she drew the dainty zipper up the back and then let it settle. Fingers pushed carefully at the low lying waves that had been gathered into a loose bun at the nape of her neck. A pin was slid into place to secure a stray tendril.

Paige gave a few quick nods of her head and drew in a steady breath.

“If you’re concerned about any quip Gabriel may attempt to make, I can assure you that his tongue will remain rather still in his mouth if he considers anything snide.”

She choked on a laugh that bubble up from the center of her chest.

“Oh, baby sister.” Sam’s voice from the doorway tugged on her attention and she turned just enough to look him over. A simple gray suit, white shirt, no tie. Sam had never liked ties, or scarves, or neck gators. Their mother used to say he had likely been choked to death in a previous life. He held three cream colored peonies cradled by a handful of green hydrangeas. “These are for you.” He told her as he stepped further into the room, turning the gathered little bouquet out towards her. “Lin thought you would like simple.”

Paige nodded again, she did not want fancy, she did not want extravagant. Either option was unnecessary. All she wanted was to put herself up there, right next to Alex, keep her hands off of Silvercloud long enough for him to give his apparent blessing.

“Where’s Ben?” She looked form Sam to Beth.

“Getting dressed.” The other woman replied, tucking an errant strand of hair behind her ear. Her thumb set against the corner of her mouth, she assumed, to blot further at the red lipstick she had been coerced into donning.

“Are we waiting for anything in particular?” Sam rocked up onto the balls of his feet for a moment, hands in his pockets.

“I really don’t see how a blindfold will help conceal the location of your hideout.” Jay muttered at the man standing behind him. He had already told his sister that he couldn’t come, didn’t dare to risk finding out where they were all hiding. Steven Lang had made it clear that he was looking for the Summers’ brothers, knew that Paige was involved with one and had tried to get to her through Sam.

Steven had used Jay to get Sam to cooperate. Steven didn’t know that Jay wasn’t in his thrall like a good Hound should be. He had his theories about that, but he had to play nice and pretend.

It was the only way to keep his family safe.

“Dude, I told you. I can just wipe everything out of your mind in regards to the location.” Benji had shown up, declared that Jay would be his and Kira’s present to the bride. Jay had not been amused. Still wasn’t. His wings ruffled behind him and he heard Benji curse. “Really, man? Face full of feather is not cool.” He muttered.

Jay just silently laughed. But he behaved, letting his wings droop a little so Benji could tie the knot in the blindfold. The man had even been kind to produce him some wedding attire. A midnight blue suit, white shirt but no tie. His bright red wings were in stark contrast with the suit but he could not hide them. Did not want to hide them. They were a part of him after all. “Could you not forget my guitar?” Jay told the man.

“On it. Now, don’t fall on your face.” Benji declared.

Jay felt a push, a tingling sensation when he walked through a … portal? … and then the sensation was gone. The blindfold disappeared and he felt something else appear on top of his head. Yet, he didn’t have time to ask what it was when he got shoved through a doorway and heard his older brother ask if they were waiting for anything in particular.

“TADAAA!” Benji yelled behind him. “Our, Kira and mine, present to the lovely bride, we wanted to put him in a box but … he objected.” Benji stood next to Jay, grinning. “So, a bow instead.”

And Jay lifted his hand to his head, feeling the tell-tale signs of a bow. “Dude…” He started, but Benji swatted his hand away. Jay sighed, turned back to look at his siblings and tried for a smile. His eyes fell on Paige and he blinked. She was looking gorgeous. As always.

“Hey…” He just said, feeling slightly uncomfortable for being thrown into a room with his sister who he hadn’t seen for a very long time.

Be nice.

That was Caitlin’s instruction.

Once they had pawned the dynamic trio off on Wanda, he had followed her Cait into the shower, got her good and clean everywhere, and then stepped himself out. He buttoned the ivory shirt up to his collarbone, no way was it going about his neck, and no way was he wrapping that damned back tie around into place either. Then he slipped on the deep gray jacket. Gabe turned once in from of the mirror, stepped closer to it and inspected his face for nicks, satisfied when he found not a trace. Then he turned towards the door, smirked at the sound of the shower still running and the humming coming from within.

He wasn’t sure why his wife insisted on instilling such an idea of telling him he needed to be nice. He was a nice person. For the most part. Not much different than anyone else. And if anyone wanted his opinion, he thought his temperament and personality rather stellar. He could be a complete and utter dick of a dictator if he really wanted to be. He was one of the most wanted individuals in the country for a reason, and yet, for the most part he kept his profile relatively low. SentS hadn’t even a solid footing to guess that he and Cait had kids. See? Low profile.

Gabe shook his head as he moved down the hall, brought up short at the sight of pink hair putting herself directly in his path. When he looked up at her expectantly, she reached up and fixed the shirt collar, folding it into place and securing one further button.

“You should at least manage some presentability for the ceremony.” Megan commented and then petted him against the chest before stepping around him. “Summers.” She sighed.

He was exceedingly aware of the starstruck eyes she made Alex’s way whenever she crossed paths with him. He didn’t see it. When he had prompted her about himself, she had shook her head and informed him-to his dismay-that Gabe was the older brother she had never had. He only sort of took offense to that.

Once he finally rounded towards Scotts room, he reached for the knob, finding it locked. With barely a flick of his wrist, he knocked the ambient energy in the hall about to flick the locking mechanism out of place so he could push the door open. “Hope you’re dressed because I don’t want to see anything.” He announced as he worked at a wrist button.

As Alex donned the suit - one Scott had gone off to buy with him shortly after Alex had popped the question - he wondered whether Paige was alright with this. Their little idea of an impromptu wedding was fast evolving into something seemingly involving the entire theatre. Then he contemplated whether he was alright with this. Maybe it should have been just the two of them and Ben. Well, his brothers, hers … but then, where did one draw the line? There was Cait, the kids, Emma, …

Buttoning up his vest, Alex was just pulling the suit jacket off the hanger, when behind him the door unlocked. In the mirror he stood in front of, he saw his younger brother. Alex watched him, smirked at his words, then chuckled. Then a single eyebrow went north. “So you do own a razor?”

Alex stood for a moment, regarding his brother. Gabriel looked younger yet with his beard shaven off. Alex wondered what Caitlin had to say about the perpetual growth on his brother’s face being gone.

He shrugged into the jacket, buttoning it up – two out of the three – and then undoing them again. He exhaled, not quite certain he believed the man he saw in that mirror was himself. He took the flowers Emma had fastened to the pin before from the desk and attached it to the jacket’s lapel. Then he turned to Gabriel. “How do I look?”

Taking a deep breath, his shoulders rose then fell again.

“Everyone’s going to be there, right?” He asked, his gaze going out of the window for a moment. “I’m still not sure how we got from Paige, Ben and me to … this.”

But that hardly mattered. Down the line what did was that he was finally making the right decision.

“Thanks for being my Best Man.”

He watched Alex button a pair of buttons to his jacket, then seemed to change his mind and undid them again. Then his brother assessed himself in the mirror and he wondered what he saw, and then what he hoped that he saw. Gabe kept his mouth shut. Be nice. He was supposed to be nice. That meant he had to assess every handful of words he thought up before he dumped them out of his mouth. It was possible for Alex to take offense to just about anything he put forth, especially in an emotionally charged situation.

Alex pinned a simple cluster of flowers to his lapel and took a deep breath. He asked how he looked, and Gabe exhaled. Alex went on about how this had been meant to be small, barely more than just them, and he sighed again. His brother really had no idea how women operated. It didn’t matter if Paige wanted just him and her, once it got out that there was anything going on-which was easy in a house with telepaths-everything evolved, grew, became so much more.

“Yeah, I own a razor, kind of wondering if you do.” He smirked. “And not everyone.” The majority of those living in theater were waiting for after, for the sit-down dinner and the possible dancing. Paige had implied that she wanted simple, and he wasn’t one to want to piss her off. “Ben likes to invite people to things, apparently, might want to curb that before he decides to marry someday.” Or his nephew’s wedding could see hundreds. That thought made his own mind spin, the idea of their kids being grown.

“I’d suggest buttoning the jacket, at least for the ceremony.” He took another step forward. “And someone has to be the best at something, I mean, I am pretty good at a lot of things.” His smile widened and he slightly shook his head.

He opened his mouth again until something tugged at his thoughts, something half formed and only slightly tingling on the edges. He narrowed his eyes slightly as he tried to identify it. Until the door was thrown open wide and two small boys raced inside. It was an odd sensation, he would admit that, something that had been subtle before Ben’s arrival, now it was louder though oddly not quite as cohesive as it had been when it had only been the twins. He imagined it something like a surge of electricity coursing through a light socket at a voltage beyond necessary.

Ben had on little boxer briefs and a dress shift with little else, Tony at least had pants on and his jacket in hand trailing behind him like a cape until they skid to a halt, a ruckus of laughter abound.

“Where’s your sister?” He homed in on Tony.

“Wanda took her out to get flowers.” The boy laughed.

It was an hour later.

Everyone was gathered in the theatre’s garden. Everyone was silent, and waiting. Jon Silvercloud was the ordained minister and he stood, presiding over a man and a woman who wanted to be joined in holy matrimony today.

Alex stood there, gazing down at his Paige. She looked everything like the dream he’d been dreaming for so long now. Just that here and now, she would be his. His.

Gabriel stood behind him, Scott no more than two steps down. If at any time family had ever mattered to one Alex Summers it was now. Because he needed his brothers here. He needed them to witness. But more so, he needed her to say yes.

So when everyone waited, Alexander Summers spoke his vows to the woman he wanted to be his last first kiss.

Finally.

“For the longest time in my life, I didn’t know where I belonged.
I would move from place to place. But none were mine …
And then I met you.

A woman who gave me a place to come home to,
To be me.
You would laugh at my jokes, and eat the food I’d make.
You would come to my missions, and made sure I’d get home alive.

And I never even realised.

Four years I spent without you,
And I learned that a life spent without you is no life.
I don’t know why you took me back.
I don’t know why I get to be the man in your life again.

All I know is that I’ll do anything to be that man.
I’ll do anything to have that place in your life because you make me a man I’ve never been.
You make me want to be strong.
You make me want to be here. And staying.
There is no other place for me.

No place but by your side.
For the rest of my life.
I love you, Paige.“
