Gaia & Its Kingdoms
Eternal Conflict

Gaia
Gaia is a world much like our own. Just that you can consider it a little older. Society has been recording (and losing) history for around 8000 years, five thousand of which matter to us. It all started with a highly developed planet. Technology, science, knowledge everywhere. It continued with the discovery of the Eternal Spring, awell that seemingly granted magical abilities. It all seemed to end with the war that broke out over it. Creatures ranging from magnificent to abominable where created in the wake of the spring's discovery, shaping the world how it would be for thousands of years to come. When, during a civil war, the Eternal Spring was destroyed it seemed that magic would vanish from Gaia as suddenly as it had appeared. Yet, a hundred years later, another spring, the Well of Sorrow, was discovered. It refuelled the skills so many of the planet's inhabitants had developed over centuries, giving it an even darker after-taste.

Politics
The feudal system is the dominant one in this world, taking us into a time that you might compare to the late middle ages of Earth. Gaia comprises three large kingdoms: L'Empyrea, the Thornlands and Southlyn. In each kingdom two races have joined forces. Each race is lead by a regent who rules either through birthright, election or force and oppression.

There is a constant reminder of centuries of war and conflict seething under the surface. Someone is always at someone else's throat and new conflicts grow seemingly effortless. It is wise for anyone in this world to always be on their guard.

People
The people of Gaia differ in appearance, reachable age and beliefs depending on what race and kingdom they belong to. A few neutral peoples have survived during the ongoing battles; resorting to nomad-lives and the wish to not affiliate themselves with any of the kingdoms.

Magic & Non-Magic
Most races on Gaia do possess two magical abilities. However, that does not mean that your average, run-of-the-mill (magicless) human does not exist. You may of course choose to play a human. Though it needs to be noted that most players of EC use the existing magical abilities more like an accessory rather than something that dominates the character's life.

The Celestials
Eternal Conflict

Origins
The Celestials were, as their name suggests, once created in the image of divine beings. They were supposed to pacify the raging war but soon developed a mind of their own, freeing themselves and laying the foundation for their own society.

Homeland
The Celestials live in L'Empyrea, their capital being Eporanis. The northern hemisphere of the continent of L'Empyrea is what you can consider a quiet, beautiful countryside with many smaller mountain ranges, plateaus, luscious greens and deep blue lakes and rivers.

Races
The Celestial races are the Acolytes (healers), Archangels (police), Heralds (messengers), Paladins (military) & Sentries (guards & watchers). Humans do live amongst the Celestials in Eporanis and L'Empyrea.

Kingdom
The Celestials are led by an Archon, which is a regent either chosen by birthright or through succeeding in certain tests to prove proper ability for leadership. The kingdom of L'Empyrea also houses the Aquilae, a race that they are not friendly with.

The Aquilae
Eternal Conflict

Origins
The Kingdom of Redland, abbreviated as simply ‘Redlands’ and also known as ‘The Parted Kingdom’ or ‘The Crownlands’ was born out of conflict. The human races, mainly left to their own devices by their magical neighbours, had carved out large nations for themselves. However, the peace between these nations was tenuous at best. Wars were fought and land was annexed and liberated in equal measure. The fighting seriously hampered the development of these nations.

Homeland
The Kingdom of Redland emcompasses lands in both L’Empryea and Southlyn, making it one of the most environmentally varied nations in Gaia. From rolling deserts to lush green landscapes, white beaches to stormy tundras. Their capital and largest city is called Spiremount and this is where the King holds his seat in a castle called Crownguard. The King uses a traditional feudal system and has broken their lands into several smaller states. These states are each controlled by a Great House who has the dubious honor of maintaining their fief for the King. This includes taxation, law, and military obligations. In turn, these Great Houses have their own vassals within their designated lands which provide arms, workers and funds to that House.

Races
The Kingdom of Redland is mainly human, with only around 5% of their population exhibiting magical abilities. Every person with such abilities can trace their lineage back to the magical soldiers that King Darland Whitbane used in The Long Burn. Knight of the Talon (knights), Battlemage (military), Alchemist (various), Cardinal (inquisitors), Whiteblade (Soldier), Loris (scholar).

The Races: Bloodshadow

The Bloodshadow
Eternal Conflict

Origins
The Bloodshadow is a wondrous breed of people. They were indeed born of the legends they resemble, once bread to become to the new force of order after the Celestials developed a mind of their own. Their nature gives them a dependency on blood, making them the ones who're likely feared the most on Gaia.

Homeland
The Bloodshadow inhabit the north-western areas of the Thornlands situated on the larger landmass of Gaia, sharing their kingdom with the Scourge in an almost non-existent truce. Their headquarters are situated on the most northern tip where a high mountain range makes the land uninhabitable. Wyvernridge, dominated by a large castle, is the geographical point, from which most Bloodshadow leaders have tried to stake their claim in a world shaken by constant conflict.

Races
Geneticists must have once looked to tales, horror stories and legends to create those who today walk amongst the Bloodshadow. Trading basic vital functions in for superior speed and strength, the Bloodshadow is plagued by a constant need for blood of the living. There are the ever famous Vampires (self-proclaimed royalty), Skinwalkers (warriors), Wendigos (hunters & outlaws), Lidercs (aids & tricksters) and the Djinn (illusionists).

Kingdom
Their kingdom they share with the Scourge. The most notable aspect about the Bloodshadow is that they appear to be less organised or streamlined into positions and ranks compared to most other races. There barely exists the sense of a unified mind. It's more each to their own which is reflected in there being less and less Bloodshadow-initiated attacks on anything or anyone but lone farmers, small villages or solitary wanderers.

The Races: Scourge

The Scourge
Eternal Conflict

Origins
The origins of the Scourge tell what probably is the saddest story of all people on Gaia. Once they were of all kinds of races, many of them even were humans. That was until a large-scale experiment went wrong, trapping souls between the here and the worlds beyond Gaia. Bestowed with the ability to change phases, they've become the feared and misunderstood living dead. Those who fall in the battle between the kingdoms are harboured by the Scourge and stopped from moving on, this way adding to their numbers and force.

Homeland
The Scourge live on the north-eastern areas of the Thornlands, building their strange capital of Stormgarde in an almost impenetrable swampland known as Silvermoor. Many have found their ends either naturally or through Bloodshadow hands. Stormgarde, much like the Scourge themselves, is not rooted in only one world. It is a form of protection, that in a situation of danger, the entire town can be shifted to where no human or member of another race can reach it.

Races
The races of the Scourge paint a mirror picture of the way this people was created. Torn from their existence in an instant without choice or mercy, their nature reflects their deepest wish in life. There are the Death Knights (noble warriors), Draugr (haunters), Revenants (avengers), Sceadugenga (mimics) and the Banshee (furies).

Kingdom
The Thornlands kingdom is in a way actually two smaller kingdoms rolled into one as neither the Scourge nor the Bloodshadow care for the other's aid or hospitality much. It is a fragile deal between these unlike allies to leave the other's territory alone.

The Races: Magi

The Magi
Eternal Conflict

Origins
The Magi, can easily be said, have been around the longest. Direct descendants from the Magans who once constituted a single society inhabiting Gaia, they've become dogmatic fanatics after the discovery of the Eternal Spring demanding leadership over all of those affected by the spring's water.

Homeland
The Magi live on the south-western areas of the larger landmass of Gaia. Their lands belong to the kingdom of Southlyn which they share with the Renegades. Before the destruction of the Eternal Spring, their capital was the beautiful Starhaven. This city, however, was almost completely wiped out and, after the discovery of the Well of Sorrow, replaced by the city of Starfall.

Races
The "races" of the Magi are less that and more of a chosen calling of abilities to be acquired. This is due to the fact that the Magi were not genetically produced but instead taught themselves how to manipulate certain aspects of nature, the human physique, etc. You will find the Spellbreakers (military & police), Grand Inquisitors (intelligence), Archmages (manipulators of the elements), Warlocks (summoners) and Scions (healers & scholars).

Kingdom
The kingdom of Southlyn is shared amongst the Magi and Renegades. Latter were once a part of the former, and have since freed themselves from their place as Commons amongst the aristocratic Magi. The Magi are ruled by a Prince who holds the title through election.

The Races: Renegades
Please note that all links printed bold require membership (click to register now).

The Renegades
Eternal Conflict

Origins
The Renegades originally were humans. Historically, they are the youngest races to develop. Men and women, once exiled from the Magi society, decided to emancipate themselves through the means of bestowing magical abilities upon themselves. This way, out of a group of outlaws and criminals, the today proud, righteous and very passionate people who call themselves the Renegades were born.

Homeland
Their homeland is a wide area of deep, green forests, rich fertile lands and high mountain ranges, surrounded by water and split by many rivers. Living in Southlyn, their largest settlement and capital is what they call the Southlyn Weyr: a whole town carved into high mountains on the farthest south-eastern tip of the land.

Races
Concerning appearance, age and ways of living, the Renegades get closest to the normal humans. Most notable is their relatively short lifespan of only a maximum of hundred years for example compared to the immortal Magi. The most prominent races amongst them are the Dragonriders (aerial defence), Hunters (infantry & cavalry), Marksmen and -women (wide-range offence & defence), Harbingers (intelligence) and the Bards (scholars).

Kingdom
Their kingdom they share with the Magi, their arch-nemesis, so to speak. The truce between both people is no stronger than the thinnest of glass and many times the hostility flares when Renegades point out their right for freedom while Magi note their place as servants to the great Magi. The Renegades are traditionally lead by the Renegade Elder, a man or woman who oversees the Weyr by birthright. Lately, however, a Weyrleader has been installed, standing at the helm with a Council of Five (usually including the Elder) by his or her side.
